Are UGGS Popular Anymore?
So do people still wear UGGS or has the brand lost its way?
Well, I think there are two indicators of whether a footwear brand is doing well. Firstly there are the cold hard figures from the brand’s results. These give an indicator as to whether people are still buying the product or if sales are on a downward spiral.
If you look at the figures from Deckers who own the brand their figures show a very healthy picture. In 2021 the brand increased sales by 15.4% or $1.9 billion. Bearing in mind the brand sold around $50 million in the year 2000 when people perceived the brand to be at its most popular things have only gone on an upward trajectory since then.
The second indicator is whether celebrities are still wearing them. If they are then you can bet UGG boots and their other styles are going to be popular by default in the general population. Well here are just some of the celebs who have been spotted wearing them in the past year:
- Bella Hadid
- Gigi Hadid
- Kendall Jenner
- Kylie Jenner
- Dua Lipa
- Kaia Gerber
- Jennifer Lawrence
- Hailey Beiber
- Selena Gomez
- Irina Shayk
- Emily Ratajkowski
It appears that celebrities think the brand is a must-have and they are styling their wardrobes around them. When celebrities decree a brand is cool you can bet that everyone else will be copying their outfits and looks this season.
When you add these two elements together it is obvious to see not only do people still wear uggs but they are more popular than ever.
Is It Acceptable To Wear UGGS?
I am a great believer in wearing what you want and when you want.
There is no reason why people need to follow high fashion or the latest trends. If you believe that UGG boots are warm, comfortable, and great for the fall and winter then you should wear them.
Style doesn’t necessarily mean following trends and celebrity outfits it is about creating your own sense of style.
The fact is that UGG boots and some of their newer styles have never gone away. People are continuing to wear them and as the brand diversifies this is likely to continue for many years to come.
Remember footwear doesn’t always have to be about style it can be about practicality as well. Wearing UGG boots to stay warm and cozy makes sense in the colder months. Style them however you want. Wear them with leggings, jeans, or even a dress. Just own your look and nobody will even think about commenting on your winter outfit.
When is it acceptable to wear UGGS? Well read my article on the times of year when they are most used but remember you can break those rules.
UGG New Releases
Whilst most people used to associate UGGs with their classic boots times have changed and the band is making great strides in diversifying its portfolio of products. Here are just some of their latest releases that are getting everyone talking.
Fluff Yeah Slippers
Did you ever think you would pay around $100 for a pair of slippers? I certainly didn’t until UGG made them super desirable. Their Fluff Yeah Slippers are a new take on boudoir slippers of old without the heel making them significantly more wearable.
Classic Mini Platform Boots
Everyone knows about the classic UGG boot styles but as ever the brand has put a new twist on their classic design and created platform boots. Flatforms are big right now and these sheepskin boots are right on trend.
Brellah Rain Boots
These platform moon boots don’t use traditional sheepskin as many UGG products do. Instead, these boots are made from waterproof materials and rubber so that you can wear them when it is raining. The brand has recognized that finding materials that allow its products to be worn more widely means more sales.
When Did UGGS Go Out Of Style?
Vogue seems to think that UGGS went out of style sometime around 2010 and the sheepskin boots stayed out of the mainstream for a number of years before slowly coming back into fashion. Now I don’t want to argue with Vogue who are experts in fashion and footwear however the reality was that UGGS never really went away and sales still rocketed after 2010.
2010 was the year in which UGG hit $1 billion in global sales for the first time. By 2012 this revenue peaked at 1.7 billion before dropping off to sales of $900 million in 2015. However, as I have shown since then those figures are on the rise again with sales at nearly $2 billion currently. So whilst there was a small dip in sales for a few years it didn’t last very long.
Whilst UGG boots might have not been everyone’s favorite shoe in those wilderness years the brand had started to think about diversification. In particular into children’s wear and into slippers.
I remember when slippers were not particularly stylish or expensive but UGGS have changed all of that. Their sheepskin and fluffy slippers have totally transformed what we wear in winter at home and most of this happened around the same time as the boots became a little less popular.
Their slippers are now some of their most popular styles and are worn by many as outdoor wear.
All that has happened is that UGGS made stay-at-home style cool and captured our money by getting us to buy other products instead of just their boots. Now we are buying both again plus their new looks.
UGGs will continue to diversify I am sure for years to come with new and innovative styles that we want to buy.
Are Tall UGGS Still in Style?
At the moment it appears that with UGGs growing popularity all of their styles have come back into fashion.
A whole raft of celebs have been seen wearing the tall UGGS last year and as the weather gets colder this year I expect them to be even more popular.
It is worth noting however that UGG mini boots are also hugely popular especially now the brand has created chunkier styles with platforms.
As I mentioned earlier whilst UGGS had a dip in sales around 10 years ago all their boots are now back in fashion. So if you like tall UGG boots wear them with pride and style your winter outfit around them.
Do People Wear UGGS In The UK?
Do people still wear UGGS in the UK or is their popularity just confined to the US and Australia?
As I live in the UK I can tell you that UGG boots are still as popular here as they are in other countries. I tend to find that the footwear market tends to have global trends now rather than boots and shoe styles being confined to one market.
This is because social media is so widespread that people are able to see what other people are wearing worldwide in an instant. If they like something on Pinterest, Instagram or Tik Tok the stores will start to sell it.
The only thing that would stifle this would be a brand attempting to limit supply to create exclusivity.
Once upon a time, this was the case with UGGS. When I used to work in Covent Garden in London over 15 years ago the store near the piazza would limit the number of people entering. The idea was to create hype and an air of desirability.
As the internet has evolved however and online shopping has become huge you can buy UGG boots, shoes, and slippers everywhere online in the UK.
UGGs Popularity Is Still Rising
Do people still wear UGGs? Well, I think I have demonstrated that the brand is more popular than ever.
Whilst fashion does move on this brand is seen as a classic and when that happens it never really goes out of style. Instead, their core offering will tend to have a steady customer base and their new products will innovate and be worn by celebs and subsequently us.
Just remember you never have to be a slave to fashion. You can create your own sense of style and wear what you like. If UGG boots, shoes, and slippers float your boat then ignore what everyone else is doing and dress however you want.
