When Does UGG Season Start?
So let’s start by talking about when UGG season starts.
For most people, UGG boots tend to be something that is worn in the colder months. Typically from fall until early spring. This is because they keep your feet warm and look cozy because of the sheepskin interiors in the classic boots.
However, the reality is they can be worn all year round. Originally they were made for Australian surfers to use in summer. This is because the sheepskin on the interiors of the boots had the ability to keep your feet cool even when the weather is warm.
As the brand grew the classic UGGS began to be worn worldwide and then became a winter phenomenon that has been imitated by others. The only problem is that UGGS like the Classic 11 are not fully waterproof or even that great at water resistance.
Can You Wear UGGS In The Rain Or Will They Be Ruined?
So with that can you wear them in the rain and when is it acceptable to wear UGGS? Well, the answer is it will depend on what type of UGGS you have bought.
The brand now sells a huge range of shoes and boots and some of them are waterproof UGGS whilst others are water resistant and some are not recommended to be worn in the wet weather at all.
When people think of UGG Boots they usually think about the classic style and if you are thinking about wearing these sheepskin and suede boots in the rainy season then you are going to end up with wet feet and stained footwear that ends up smelling.
The simple fact is that they were not designed to be worn in any type of significant wet weather.
Now of course, if you wear them outside and there is a small shower they should be ok especially if you have used a water-repellent spray to protect them. They are going to fare less well if you have to wear them in heavy rain or walk through large puddles in them.
Do UGGS Get Ruined In The Rain?
When you are wearing UGG boots without any waterproofing protection on them then the classic models could get ruined in heavy rain.
With a water-repellent spray, you now will make them more water-resistant. This means that they can deal with a small amount of moisture.
A waterproof spray however will not make them waterproof even though its name seems to suggest it will. It can help but in heavy rain that excessive moisture will start to seep into the Suede and then down to the sheepskin. This is likely to cause stains on the suede exterior and discoloration. The moisture can also start to make your boots start to stink and damage their integrity.
UGG does however make a range of boots that can keep your feet warm and dry as well. Waterproof UGGS are designed to repel moisture and protect your feet from heavy rain or snow.
Are UGGS Waterproof?
Whilst the classic UGGS are not waterproof the brand does sell water-resistant footwear. These boots and shoes can be worn in the rain and snow.
Just note the difference between water-resistant boots and waterproof ones. Water-resistant boost will be able to deal with some rain and moisture provided it isn’t prolonged or you don’t saturate your boots. Waterproof boots are more able to handle more challenging conditions and are the best solution if you are intending to wear your boots when the weather is bad.
Here are some examples of the types of UGG boots that can cope with bad weather.
Classic Clear Mini Boot
The UGG Class Clear Mini Boot is a great example of a fashionable sheepskin boot that has been made waterproof by the TPU molded upper.
These are cold weather rated to -20˚C and will keep your feet dry in heavy rain. These have a wool lining to insulate your feed and a removable insole. These are the perfect boot to wear in bad weather and should be great for most people in Winter unless you live in an area that has extremely cold conditions.
Women’s Adirondack Boot III Boot
If you are looking for UGGS waterproof boots that can cope with extreme conditions then these Adirondack boots are a great example of footwear that has waterproof leather and suede.
These have a special DryTech membrane that helps to add a waterproof barrier to keep moisture out. This means that you can wear them in the water, rain and snow. The zippers and tongues have water-repellent coatings.
Men’s Butte Snow Boot
UGG boots may be associated with women’s boots but they now do a wide range of men’s as well such as these Butte Snow Boots.
These boots are able to be worn in low temperatures and are waterproof as well.
This style has a Vibram outsole which is created for the snow as well as insulation and of course, they are waterproof as well to cope with rain, slush, and snow.
Brellah Women’s Rain Boots
If you wear waterproof UGGS you can of course cope with significant rain and snow but sometimes all you need is a water-resistant boot and the brand makes those as well.
These Brellah Boots have water-repellent features which means that you can wear them in damp conditions. So this means mild to moderate rain but not heavy downpours.
These water-repellent boots are made from recycled materials making them more sustainable.
How To Waterproof UGGS
Now I know a number of you will be looking at waterproofing your classic UGGS if you can. Adding a waterproof coating can act as a protective barrier for suede to repel rain however it will not make them fully waterproof.
A waterproofing spray will act as a water repellent and should help prevent stains from minor spills and moisture but it will not miraculously allow your boots to be worn in the heavy rain or to walk around in them in standing water.
If you need boots that can cope with rain then buy one of the pairs I have suggested earlier on.
What To Spray On UGGS To Protect Them
UGG does sell its own protector spray which you can use to help add a waterproof coating to your boots. This needs to be reapplied every few months so that your boots stay looking good.
I’ve noticed that this is currently out of stock on many US sites so I have added a link to a UK store where you can buy it.
Whilst this has been specially created for UGG Boots there are plenty of other waterproofing sprays that can work equally as well. Just make sure you find one that is suitable for suede if you are looking to use it on your classic UGG Boots.
My UGGS Got Wet And Now They Are Stained
So can you wear UGGS in the rain? Well yes, you can with the water-resistant and waterproof styles but no with the classic.
If you do end up with very wet UGG boots or you find they are stained there are some simple steps you can take to help.
Let’s start by talking about stains on your boots. If something falls on your UGGS then the first thing you need to do is blot the stain with a clean paper towel or white cloth. Whatever you do don’t rub the stain or it can go deeper into the suede. Just blot to lift as much of the stain as you can.
Talcum powder or cornstarch can then be sprinkled onto the samp stain to absorb the moisture and lift the stain. Let that sit there overnight before brushing it off.
For stubborn stains, you can mix equal parts of vinegar and water and get a cloth and place it into the mix. Dab this onto the tougher stains to help them break down quicker.
For really tough stains gentle detergents like Woolite can work. Just use a small amount placed on a cloth and work into the stain gently and then wipe it off.
If everything else fails then you could see if you can find a specialist shoe repairer and cleaner who may be able to restore them. Just note that this could be pricey.
If your UGGs are soaking wet then you need to dry them. The easiest way to do this is by placing paper towels into the boots and changing the paper as it soaks up the moisture. Some people recommend stuffing with newspaper to retain the shape but I would never recommend this as the newsprint can mark the sheepskin.
Just remember to air dry them completely before wearing them again.
