I love the start of the year as that is when I begin to see what shoes are going to be big over the coming year. This season it is clear that there are a couple of big footwear winners and the most wearable style I’ve noticed are backless loafers.
This has got to be one of the easiest footwear trends out there as they are practical, comfortable and stylish. They are a new twist on the classic loafer style as they are more relaxed but they still feel polished. With their open heel and structured front they create that great balance between smart and casual making them incredibly versatile for spring and summer dressing.
These are incredibly hardworking shoes to have in your wardrobe as they work with tailored trousers, denim, mini skirts and even slip dresses. They give your looks a little bit of an edge without looking too formal. Plus they are a great wearable trend which is great if you are all about comfort.
Here are some of the styles I’ve been loving this year that nail the look.

The Best Backless Mule Loafers To Wear This Year
Cole Haan Stassi Penny
My first choice by Cole Haan is a perfect example of a traditional loafer with the backless style. This is the perfect look for warmer weather if you want to keep a polished look to your outfits.
These come in a few different colors including a standard black and some two tone styles as well. They also have half sizes which makes for a better fit.
These are perfect to wear with tailored trousers or smart skirts and could easily be worn in an office.
Sam Edelman Astrid Mules
I think the next style looks like a cross between a pair of Birkenstocks and a tassel loafer.
Despite the tassel these have a slightly more laid back luxe look that I think would work well with trousers or jeans.
I love the relatively flat sole which meakes them easier to walk in which is really important if you are a lover of comfortable footwear like I am.
Vince Camuto Cobby Mules
Suede backless loafers are another great look if you want to keep it smart. This style has an almond toe and a 1 inch heel so they are still very wearable.
I love the stitching and the minimalist buckle which adds a little detail.
Don’t worry if you are not a fan of the suede look as this company also sells this style in a huge number of different colors and fabrics if you want something a little different.
Sam Edelman Linne Loafers
A style that has been around for a little longer than the new looks are the Gucci style horsebit loafer mules. This look is really easy to pair with everything from dresses to denim and is a classic.
You could easily dress this look up for the office or alternatively go for a more relaxed look for a casual day in town. Either these backless loafers will keep you looking sophisticated and chic.
Plus the price of these is considerably less than the designer versions.
QIY Penny Loafers
Finally last but not least I had to include these loafers from Amazon as they have nailed the look perfectly.
This seasons hottest look is the ruched toe and these have it in spades. This is a quiet luxury laid back style that is perfect for the season. Just remember to size up a little in these as they run small.
Backless Slingback Loafers
Vince Camuto Gemma Slingback Loafers
When I talk about backless loafers I should also add that recently a whole other version of the look has hit the shops. Backless loafers with a slingback are just starting to take off and I really rate this style because I sometimes have difficulty keeping mules on my feet. Having a strap makes them feel more secure.
These also have a block heel of 3 inches which can give you extra height if you want it.
Naturalizer Soul Yeah Flat
Finally last but not least a pair of slingback backless loafers in a flat style. I love this brand because it is great for those of us who want extra comfort and orthopedic support in our shoes.
Thse have a special contour fit, arch support with memory foramd and the insole is molded to suit your feet. Plus there are also wide width styles for those of you who need extra room in your shoes.
Why Backless Loafers Deserve A Place In Your Wardrobe
If you’re looking for a shoe that feels current but won’t date quickly then the backless loafer trend is a smart investment this season.
They’re easy to slip on, comfortable enough for everyday wear and polished enough to elevate even the simplest outfit. Whether you style them with tailored trousers for work or relaxed denim at the weekend they add a great efforless finish to outfits whilst remaining, practical, versatile and chic.
