What To Take Into Consideration When Buying The Best Wellies for Wide Calves
If you want to buy the best wellies for wide calves then there are a number of things you need to take into consideration so that you buy boots that are going to be a good fit.
Measurement is Key
Making sure you measure your calves to check the size is key to getting the right wide calf boots. If you make a mistake you may get the wrong size and have to send them back. Whilst this isn’t the end of the world it can be disappointing if you expect certain sizes to fit and when they arrive you have to settle for a different style.
To measure correctly get a fabric measuring tape and wrap it around the widest part of your calf. Note down the calf size. Then do the same with the other leg. Your calf size will be the largest measurement of the two.
Don’t forget that if you like to wear thick socks with your boots you need to take that into consideration when you are measuring.
Check Each Brands FAQ’s
Each brand of wellies should give measurements and fitting information on their websites. Note their information to see if the brand supports your calf size.
Check out review sites such as Amazon to see what other people have to say about the fit. This can give you valuable information about the boot features and calf circumference tolerances.
Buy Adjustable Gusset Wellies
Wellies with an adjustable gusset always give you extra room to play with. This can allow you to expand your wellies in the calf or tighten them depending on the fit.
Brands With Extra Wide Calf Wellies – 57cm
The sad fact is that if you have extra wide calves there is only one retailer we could find that stocks sizes up to a calf size of 57cm.
Jileon is completely dominating the wide calf boot market with its welly designs. Whilst this is good news for people who want calf or knee-length rubber boots it isn’t so great that the choice is so limited.
You may find that some plus-size retailers may bring out limited runs of boots in the winter if you look hard enough they are like gold dust!
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Hunter Wellies Fit Big Calves?
The good news is that if you have big calves it may be possible for you to get a pair of Hunter boots to fit your calves. Hunter has a size guide on their website which details the calf circumference of their wide-fit boots.
Their adjustable and Huntress books fit a calf size of somewhere between 18 and 19 inches depending on the shoe size you buy.
These sizes are definitely in the range of wide calf boot sizes but would not fit anyone who is looking for extra wide calf footwear.
Are Le Chameau Wellies Good for Wide Calves?
Le Chameau wellies are not cheap boots so if you are going to buy a pair you want to know they can fit well. I noted that on their website the brand claimed that they had wellies that fitted wide calves in a few styles but their version of a wide calf isn’t very large.
One of the styles then mentioned with an adjustable buckle shows as having a calf size of just under 15 inches. The largest calf size I could find was the Chasseur boot with a calf circumference of just over 16.5 inches. These are technically classed as wide calf boots but barely!
If you are looking for expensive brands that cater to wider calves you are going to have a great chance of finding something that fits at Hunter or Muck Boots.
Do Barbour Make Wide Calf Wellies?
Barbour Tempest Wellies are your best bet if you are looking to buy from this British brand and need the perfect pair of boots for wide calves.
This style of wellies has a calf circumference of approximately 42cm but the adjustable gusset gives you an extra 2 or 3cm if you use it. This means the fit would equate to just over 17 and a half inches.
Whilst these are not suitable for extra wide calves they can work for people who need a larger than average calf fitting boot.
Are Aigle Wellies Good for Wide Calves?
Finally it is worth mentioning Aigle boots which are another premium boot brand. They have a large range of boots on offer and give a comprehensive size guide on their website regarding calf circumference.
Sadly this brand doesn’t offer what I would consider very wide-calf boots. They certainly have adjustable styles on their website such as the Parcours but the calf size comes in under 16 inches. This means that if you have slightly larger than average calves you might just get away with buying a pair but most ladies with the larger leg size are going to struggle to get them on.
Boot Buying For Larger Calves
The fact is that the best wellies for wide calves come in sizes from 15 inches to 18 inches. At this sizing, you are going to find a reasonable number of boots that will fit well and not feel too tight.
For anyone who is over these sizes, your choices are limited very quickly and there are very few options available. In the extra large bracket, you are really left with Jileon who has cornered this end of the market.
Whilst it would be lovely to have a huge range of boots to discuss Jileon does offer a huge range of colors and styles so you aren’t going to be stuck with boring boots. They are at a great price point, are good quality, and most importantly they cater well to their market.
