Do you want to know how to make a homemade foot peel mask at home? I love the foot peel masks that you buy because it is so satisfying to see the dry rough skin on your feet simply peel odd over a few days so that you are left with the baby-soft skin underneath. However these masks are expensive and not always easy to get hold of unless I order them online so I did some research into creating my own.
You can actually create your own version at home using natural and safe ingredients that will give you the same result. All you need is the right recipe, a little patience and you can replicate the shop bought products without spending a fortune.

Why Do Foot Peels Work?
I’ve used foot peels in the last 10 years of so because I’m prone to getting calluses on my feet.
If you think about it most feet take a beating. Standing for long hours, tight shoes, cold winters, hot summers and lots of walking all add up over time. Eventually the skin on your feet builds up layers of dead cells which can leave your heels cracked, dry or rough.
I have a post about the best callus removers where I talk about foot peel masks. I find they are a gamechanger in comparison to some other methods. They have exfoliating ingredients that help to loosen and break down those dead layers of skin so that the outer layers of your skin start to shed. I’ve found that usually a week or so after I’ve used one of these masks I’m left with softer and healthier skin one the old dead skin is removed.
I typically use masks that you can purchase on places like Amazon but it is possible to do the same thing at home with some simple household ingredients.

Safety First
Before I go on to give you my recipe just be cautious. Whether you are using a shop bought or homemade mask they really are only designed for healthy skin. If you have diabetes, circulation issues, eczema, psoriasis, or any open cuts and sores on your feet don’t use them without talking to your doctor or podiatrist first.
Even if your feet are healthy, always patch-test any new mixture on a small area of skin before applying it all over. Everyone reacts differently, and safety comes first.
The Ingredients For a DIY Foot Peel
The magic of a homemade peel lies in pairing exfoliating products with hydrating, soothing ingredients. Here are the most effective options:
- Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): Mildly acidic, it helps loosen dead skin cells.
- Lemon Juice: Naturally exfoliating thanks to citric acid.
- Epsom Salt: Gently buffs away rough patches while soaking tired feet.
- Aspirin : Crushed aspirin contains salicylic acid, a common ingredient in store-bought peels.
- Moisturizers: Coconut oil, shea butter, or aloe vera soothe and rehydrate the skin after the peel.
By combining these ingredients, you can create a simple but powerful foot peel that mimics the results of commercial products.
Step-by-Step: Homemade Foot Peel Recipe
Here’s a simple recipe that seems to work well.
Ingredients:
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- ½ cup warm water
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 5–6 uncoated aspirin tablets, crushed into powder
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil or thick foot moisturizer (for aftercare)
- Large resealable plastic bags or cling film
- A pair of socks you don’t mind staining
Instructions:
Prepare Your Feet
Start by soaking your feet in warm water with a handful of Epsom salts for about 15–20 minutes. This softens the skin and preps it for the peel. Dry thoroughly.
Make the Peel Mixture
In a bowl, combine the apple cider vinegar, warm water, lemon juice, and the crushed aspirin (if using). Stir until dissolved.
Apply the Peel
Soak cotton pads, paper towels, or thin cloths in the mixture. Wrap them around your feet, concentrating on the heels and other rough areas.
Seal It In
Slip your feet into resealable plastic bags or wrap with cling film to keep the mixture in place. Put socks over the top to hold everything together.
Wait It Out
Leave the peel on for about 60–90 minutes. Use this time to relax with a book, watch Netflix, or sip some tea. This is what I find is the most tedious issue with foot peels. They aren’t fast but the results if you have patience are great.
Rinse and Moisturize
After removing the wraps, rinse your feet thoroughly with warm water. Pat dry and immediately apply coconut oil, shea butter, or your favorite foot cream.
What to Expect After a Homemade Foot Peel
The results don’t happen overnight. Here’s a rough timeline of what you can expect:
- Day 1–2: Your feet may just feel softer and more hydrated.
- Day 3–5: The peeling begins! You’ll notice flakes or sheets of skin starting to come off, especially on your heels and soles.
- Day 6–10: Peeling intensifies. Try not to pick at the skin just let it come off naturally.
- Day 11–14: Most of the peeling should be done, and you’ll be left with noticeably smoother, fresher skin.
Always plan ahead when you are using one of these foot peels. You don’t want to do a foot peel and then have to wear sandals in the week or so afterwards. Nobody wants to see your skin peeling off! I do mine a couple of weeks before I need the super soft feel.
Tips for the Best Results
- Don’t rush it: Leave the mixture on for at least an hour for maximum effect.
- Avoid hot showers: Hot water can dry your skin further and slow down healing.
- Moisturize daily: Hydration is key to keeping your new skin soft.
- Don’t overdo it: Use a peel no more than once every 4–6 weeks. Too much exfoliation can damage the skin barrier.
- Wear socks at night: This locks in moisture and protects peeling skin from catching on sheets. Plus they stop your skin falling off in your bed sheets.
