I like to experiment sometimes with making my own footcare products and today I thought I would share with you all a recipe for a homemade peppermint foot balm I’ve been trying.
I thought I would make a batch ready for the spring/summer as peppermint is really soothing and cooling in the warmer weather. Plus it is a great way of helping to moisturize your feet and as mine tend to be dry I like to use a foot lotion or balm on them regularly.

Ingredients for Homemade Peppermint Foot Balm
I’ve chosen to do a simplified version of the foot balm because it is easier to make plus it saves money. There is always a balance to be made from choosing a shop bought product or making your own. When the costs of creating a homemade product start to rocket it is usually easier just to buy something off the shelf.
Just remember however that when you are considering the economics of doing this you can usually use your ingredients to make multiple jars so you may save in the long term.
Anyway this recipe should make around 100ml of product so make sure you have a container like a jar with a lid that is designed to hold that much.
These are the ingredients you will need:
Ingredients:
- 30g shea butter (rich and moisturizing)
- 20g coconut oil (easily available and helps to soften dry skin)
- 15g beeswax pellets (for thickness and protection)
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil (the ingredient that cools and refreshes your skin)
- 5 drops tea tree essential oil (for freshness and skin health)
I want to add just one more comment about this recipe. Always do a patch test on a small area of your skin first befort slathering this over your feet or skin in case you have any allergies or reactions. If you have sensitive skin you may be better off purchasing a known product from a footcare specialist instead of making your own to avoid any problems.
Step-by-Step Instructions
To make the homemade peppermint foot balm recipe you will need to do the following.
Melt the Main Ingredients
Add the shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax pellets into a heat safe glass bowl or jar.
Then place this bowl over a pot of lightly simmering water to melt the ingredients. Stir the products as they are melting to make sure that they all are all mixed well together. When they are fully melted and smooth you can move to the next step.
2. Cool The Mixture Slightly
Remove the mixture from the heat and let it sit for about 1–2 minutes. It should still be liquid, but not piping hot.
3. Add Your Essential Oils
Now add your peppermint and tea tree essential oils into the slightly cooled mixture. Stir well to make sure they are evenly distrubted.
4. Pour and Set
Carefully pour the mixture into your clean small jars.
Let them cool down uncovered at room temperature until fully solidified (this may take a couple of hours), or place them in the fridge to speed up the process.
5. Store and use
Once the mixture is fully set, cover it with a lids and store in a cool, dry place.
Why This Peppermint Foot Balm Works
The recipe I’ve chosen to use is simple and uses natural and safe ingredients so there are no synthetic chemcals, parabens or preservatives to worry about.
The individual ingredients work by doing the following:
- Shea butter is great for dry, cracked feet because it is rich in fatty acids and vitamins that help restore skin softness, reduce inflammation, and promote healing of rough spots.
- Coconut oil is incredibly moisturizing, with natural antibacterial and antifungal properties that help keep your feet fresh and healthy.
- Beeswax locks in moisture and helps create a protective barrier over the skin which prevents further dryness. It also gives the balm a perfect solid consistency without making it feel heavy or oily on the skin.
- Peppermint essential oil provides an instant cooling and invigorating sensation which helps to relieve tired, sore feet and improve circulation. It also is really refreshing if your feet feel hot in the summer months.
- Tea tree essential oil naturally fights bacteria and fungus, making it an excellent addition for foot care to help prevent odors and keep your skin healthy.
Yes you can make a more complex version of this balm by adding in more essential oils and ingredients but I like to keep things as simple and easy as possible.
How to Use Your Foot Lotion
I tend to massage a small amount of this homemade peppermint foot balm onto my clean feet before bedtime. Often I’ll do a foot soak first and remove any hard skin off my feet with a foot file first before putting this on.
For an overnight treatment you can wear cotton socks to lock in the moisture. I do this more in winter when my feet are cold and tend to skip this in summer otherwise my feet get too hot.
Finally remember that nothing lasts forever so this will have a shelf life. Typically this can last for around 6 months as it has no water in it but make sure that you always store it in a cool area away from heat and sunlight and that the lid is always on the jar.
If you do see any changes in color, texture and smell of the product it is time to throw it away and make a new batch.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy trying the recipe as much as I did.
