Why Are My Feet Hot At Night?
There is no one reason why you might be experiencing hot feet a night. Each individual may have different circumstances that are causing their hot feet which generally fall into these categories.
Firstly the obvious is that the weather is really warm so your body starts to feel hot and uncomfortable. If you are using a duvet or covers at night in bed you are going to overheat and have problems getting to sleep.
If that doesn’t feel like it is your problem you should then have a look at lifestyle issues. Being overweight, smoking or drinking too much can also trigger hot feet. Changes to your lifestyle can help to stop the problem and improve blood circulation.
Another reason for the problem is that you may have a problem such as athlete’s foot which can cause discomfort and excess heat. Menopause, pregnancy, and chemotherapy for cancer can also trigger these hot foot symptoms.
If you have ruled these out then your next step is to visit your physician for a check-up to make sure that you don’t have an underlying medical condition. There are lots of medical issues such as diabetes or thyroid conditions that can cause the problem so it makes sense to address any underlying issues that prevent your body’s ability to stay cool.
How Can I Make My Feet Less Hot?
If you want to know how to cool down hot feet at night addressing the underlying cause is crucial because that will allow you to aim remedies at the actual problem rather than trying lots of different remedies.
Obviously, I am not a doctor so I can’t help with underlying medical issues that are causing excess heat in your feet however I do have plenty of potential remedies that can help people with some of the lesser issues.
Here are some of my favorite ways to keep cool at night. Not that these are all simple DIY remedies and some will cost you almost nothing to implement while some are a little more expensive.
Keeping Feet Cool At Night Using a Blanket Lifter
Some people like my husband insist on sleeping with covers even when the weather is super hot. If this is you then you could try using a blanket lifter device to raise your sheets and duvet off the bed and allow air to get to your feet.
Whilst these devices are typically used for people who have just had operations they will work just as well if you have burning feet at night and want to cool down.
Make Your Foot Cooler For Bed By Taking A Foot Bath
Having a foot bath before bed can be a great way to cool your feet before you go to sleep at night. Some people prefer this to be in cold water but moderately warm water can work just as well.
A foot soak with a product in the water can also help. In particular, using Epsom salts or apple cider vinegar in the water has been known to help with hot feet.
If Your Legs Get Hot At Night Use a Bed Fan
There are all sorts of great technology that you can buy now to help you cool your feet and get a great night’s sleep. One of the premium products on the market is the BedJet 3 cooling and heating fan for beds.
This is a device that allows hot or cold air to be pumped into the bed so that you can adjust the temperature to something that works well for you.
The great thing about this device is that you can decide to cool the whole bed or if your partner wants a different temperature you can adjust the temperatures on either side of the bed to different levels.
Whilst this isn’t a cheap device its dual function means it can be used in summer when you feel hot as well as the winter when you might actually have cold feet.
Drink More Water
For a simple and cheap way to keep your feet cool at night make sure that you are not dehydrated.
Some people find that when they are dehydrated they can’t keep their feet cool and that is when they start to experience problems with their feet,
Remember that you sweat more in the summer so it is important to drink enough water throughout the day to help. Drinking alcohol can also dehydrate the body so limiting it on hot nights might help keep your feet cool on a hot night.
How To Cool Hot Feet With a Hot Water Bottle
Whilst a hot water bottle is traditionally associated with cold weather it can have a dual use in summer.
Instead of filling a hot water bottle with warm water put in cold water instead and some crushed ice as well. Your cold water bottle can then be placed at the foot of your bed so that you can put your feet on it at night.
This can help relieve hot feet and allow you to fall asleep more easily.
Buy a Cooling Pad For Feet
Foot cooling techniques aren’t that different from some that are used to help regulate body temperature for example during menopause.
A cooling pad for example is a simple solution for hot or burning feet as you simply place the product in the fridge for a few hours before you need it to cool down.
Take it out at bedtime and place it where your feet are and it should keep them cold until you fall asleep. The product can also be used in the microwave and heated.
The only problem with these cooling pads is that they do eventually heat up. This means that you could develop hot feet later on in the night which you could wake up.
I know I used to use something similar to help with hot flushes that was placed on my pillow to keep me cool. Often I would get frustrated as it got hotter and hotter and eventually I would throw it out of the bed.
Cooling Socks for Burning Feet
Have you ever heard of cold therapy socks? Traditionally these have been used for people who want to reduce foot swelling, relieve plantar fasciitis or help with the impact of chemotherapy. Yet they can be used for hot feet as well.
These socks are made for men and women to cool hot or burning feet. Just pop the gel pack that comes with the socks into the freezer and then slot it into the pouch in the socks when you are ready for bed.
These are a relatively cheap way to keep your foot cooler, as well as help, reduce swollen feet.
Using a Leg Elevation Pillow For Good Blood Circulation
Sometimes hot feet at night can be caused by your feet swelling during the day. Sometimes this is simply caused by the hot weather but it can also be caused because of blood circulation problems.
So to prevent your feet overheating and swelling you can use a bed wedge to raise your feet up to help with circulation and reduce the problem.
I have a guide to some of the best leg elevation pillows that you can read which should help you if you decide to go down this route.

You might want to know that they also do a foot spray in the range as well which can be spritzed on your feet on a hot night.
Rubbing Your Feet With Aloe Vera Gel
If you have skin irritation, swelling or redness then aloe vera gel can be a great solution to reduce the problem.
Aloe vera gel when it is rubbed on your feet can help to soothe that hot feeling and cool your lower legs as well if you want.
Aloe vera might be a handy tool in your armory to stop your feet from overheating and allow you to get that good night’s rest that you deserve.
Use The Right Bed Linen
If you want to know how to cool down hot feet at night then think about the bed linen that you are currently using.
The wrong bed linen can make you sweaty and uncomfortable which can cause discomfort. So instead think about buying bed sheets and linens that are breathable and have cooling properties to help you regulate your temperature at night.
These breathable and cooling bedsheets might just help you to feel more comfortable at night and keep your feet cool.
Change Your Lifestyle
Finally, remember that if you want to how to cool down hot feet at night you may also need to change your lifestyle.
Excess body weight, smoking too much, and excess alcohol consumption can all contribute to foot health issues. If you believe that these are contributing then you need to start to alter what you do.
Walk more, quit smoking, eat sensibly, and drink in moderation. These changes can help to make a difference and will make you happier and healthier.
