The Benefits Of Choosing A Versatile Shoe Color
Owning shoes in a few core colors makes things so much easier and takes away the headache of trying to buy specific shoes to match certain outfits.
I find that when you I concentrate on buying shoes in neutral colors I spend considerably less because my footwear goes with so much more.
Versatile shoes help make it easier for you to co-ordinate your outfits.
I am all about putting something on my feet and walking out the door rather than ruminating and trying on different colors to see what matches.
Plus neutral shoes will work with any season or trend that comes along.
You are also going to save money by only buying shoes that match what you already have. It makes no sense to buy shoes in an array of colors only to discover that most of them won’t match most of your clothes.
Here are the colors that I think are widely regarded as the best versatile option for your wardrobe.
What Shoe Color Goes With Everything? – Classic Black
To quote Christian Dior “You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it for almost any occasion”.
My number one versatile shoe colour is black. 95% of the shoes in my wardrobe are black and the thought of buying different color shoes fills me with dread.
Dark shades are the ultimate neutral and make everything so much more stylish.
I don’t just own black shoes but boots and black sneakers as well. I refuse to buy sneakers that are black on top and have a white rubber bottom as it doesn’t suit my all black aesthetic. Black is the shoe color for me because it is the most versatile of all the shades.
Black shoes match every color and pattern and you can wear them with brights, pastels, prints, neutrals and so much more.
When I wear a black shoe I know that it doesn’t matter what the dress code is as my shoes can be worn in the office, to dinner, for interviews, weekend wear or for informal or formal occasions.
Wearing a black shoe makes you feel confident and polished and will never make you stand out at work or at big events. It is the perfect foundation for any outfit and you can let your cloths and accessories do the talking.
Plus black shoes are universally flattering which I think is what most people want them in their wardrobe.
This Sam Edelman Hazel Pump is a class black high heeled shoe and would look good with just about any outfit.
For a shoe that is easier to wear and is perfect for casual wear these Tory Burch Minnie Ballet Flats have become a classic.
Choose Brown For Versatile Casual Shoes
Whilst black shoes are the more versatile shoe color in my view I have to add that there are plenty of other neutral colors out there that are worth buying.
Brown or tan shoes for example are great if the dress code is less formal and you are looking to style a casual outfit.
Brown shoes can be worn with black (never let anyone say they can’t) but they also work well with so many other colors as well.
Brown shoes work with so many other colors if you give them a try. Plus they look amazing with jeans or casual skirts and dresses. If you are a work place and its dress down day expect plenty of people wearing brown shoes to match their tailored chinos and polo tops.
There are so many shades of brown out there for you to choose from which adds interest to any outfit. Just find a pair of shoes that suits your casual style and be amazed at how it will match so many items in your wardrobe.
Hermes knows this as their brown Oran Sandal is a bestseller. If you can’t afford the real deal this Steve Madden dupe works just as well.
If you want something a little more dressy these Fericzot Women’s Stiletto High Heels show that brown can work well for the evening.
The Most Versatile Color Shoes Include Nude and Beige Shades
If you want a shoe color that goes with every outfit then take a lead from Anna Wintour the editor in chief of Vogue Magazine. This woman is a fashion goddess and has dressed some of the most famous people on the planet.
So what does she wear on her feet? Well nude Monolo Blahnik strappy sandals made especially to match her skin tone.
Now you would think that a woman with access to every shoe available would be swapping and changing her footwear every day but it is the complete opposite.
Anna sticks to her nude sandals with a slight heel and wears them with everything. Her outfits constantly change and she wears different colors and patterns but the shoes remain the same.
So why does she do this? Well there are a number of reasons.
A nude shoe color matches everything so she never had to think about wear with her outfits. They act as a neutral base allowing her clothes in bolder colors to take center stage without competing.
Nude shoes also help to elongate the legs if they match your skin color. They can also work for formal and casual wear. Kate Middleton for example regularly wears them with her formal outfits and they never look out of place.
Plus she simply loves the look. She has been wearing them since the mid 1990’s and they haven’t gone out of style unlike plenty of other shoe styles and colors.
These Nine West Flax Dress Pumps look stylish and much more expensive than they are.
For something a little more comfortable these Vionic Ballet Flats have built in arch support.
Versatile Shoe Colors Include Metallics
Black, brown and nude are without doubt the most versatile of all the shoe colors but there are some others that come a close second.
Metallic shoes for example in shades like silver, gold and bronze can go with multiple outfits and are particularly suited for stylish evening events.
Whilst they might not work for an interview in a formal company they are great for evening looks and even day time if worn with the right clothes.
Metallic shoes can also turn a casual outfit into something with a little more zing and can make jeans and plain dresses and trousers look a little more polished.
These Franco Sarto Racer pumps in silver are a great example of metallic shoes that are functional and stylish.
For lower heeled shoes try buying these Franco Sarto Mary Jane Gold Flats.
Think Like Jean Muir And Wear Navy
Jean Muir was an English fashion designer who was a big fan of black and navy. In fact in her latter years she wore dark navy blue outfits and footwear as her signature style.
What I love about navy is that it is a neutral that doesn’t overpower. Even though it is a color it blends seemlessly with what you are wearing rather than standing out.
You can dress it up or down and it complements all skin tones make it universally flattering. Plus you can wear it year round making it one of the most versatile options out there.
If anything was going to take me away from my beloved black shoes then navy would be my second choice.
I love these SHOWFOREST Women’s Square Toe High Heel Pumps that look so sophisticated.
Gray Shoes Can Work With Many Outfits
My final second tier neutral color is gray. Gray shoes can be a great neutral color which can work with dressy or casual outfits.
They are an alternative to the typical footwear that you might see in black and brown and can work for casual weekend wear to professional workwear.
Full disclosure it is my least favorite of all the neutral shades but I have started to come round to it as a color for sneakers instead of gleaming white which is hard to keep clean.
These Leona Pumps are a great example of a neutral gray shoe that is perfect for when you want to look smart.
Choose Neutral Footwear To Match Everything
The most versatile shoe color is without doubt black but most neutral colors can be worn just about anywhere and will complement any outfits.
Certainly if you are trying to build a capsule wardrobe or want to invest money in shoe colors that won’t be faddy then neutrals are the way forward.
Spend more on classy shoes that go with everything and spend a little less on other colors and you will have the perfect shoe closet.
