I had to write a quick post about this video that I saw on Threads last night whilst doing my usual scrolling. Apparently this trick will lighten your heels and act as a foot scrub. All I could think of is why is that person smearing a concoction of toothpaste, baking soda and coconut oil onto a sanitary pad to wear inside their socks?

Messy DIY Foot Scrubs: Why There’s Better Ways to Get Smooth Feet
DIY foot scrubs like this can be a fun project or entertaining on social media, but some methods can get quite messy and might not be as effective as you hope.
This viral video uses a mixture that promises smooth feet but can lead to a sticky, cumbersome mess.
The combination of toothpaste, coconut oil, and baking soda on a sanitary pad often leads to more mess than results. Plus don’t talk to me about why the person is putting this concotion on their feet whilst sat on their sofa!
These ingredients are going to be difficult to rinse off, and coconut oil, in particular, can leave an oily residue on your skin. Plus if it gets on your sofa it will never look the same again.
A DIY foot scrub like this is unlikely to deeply exfoliate tough skin or effectively remove calluses. It can also be time-consuming to prepare and apply, not to mention the clean-up that follows. Although these ingredients have individual benefits, they don’t always work well in DIY recipes—especially when there are easier, more effective options.
There are Better Foot Scrubs Out There
If you want a foot scrub to remove dead skin this post will tell you all about a great shop bought product as well as some DIY foot scrub methods that you can use at home that are more effective.
When you use them make sure you are in your bathroom or a place where it is easy to clean up after yourself if you make any mess or create any spills.
Remember that foot scrubs are great at removing surface level dead skin but won’t work on deep calluses on your feet which need a different approach.
A Better Solution: Foot Peel Socks for Faster, Cleaner Results
If you’re looking to achieve truly smooth, callus-free feet without the mess, foot peel socks are an excellent alternative. I use these three or four times a year and the results from them are truly startling.
Foot peel socks contain gentle but effective exfoliating ingredients, like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and fruit extracts, that penetrate deeply to dissolve dead skin layers over time. After wearing them for about an hour, the socks get to work, and within a few days, you’ll notice a gradual peeling process that reveals fresh, soft skin.
- No Mixing or Mess: With foot peel socks, you simply slip them on and relax—no messy mixing or sticky ingredients to deal with.
- Deeper Exfoliation: Foot peel socks go beyond the surface, breaking down tough skin for smoother, softer feet.
- Easy and Convenient: Unlike DIY scrubs that require several steps, foot peel socks are straightforward and easy to use. Simply wear them, rinse, and let the peeling process work over the following days.
Plus foot peel socks don’t cost the earth which means they are a really affordable way to improve the way your feet look.
The only downside is that when your skin is peeling off it can be unsightly so make sure you time your use of them well before any event or holiday so that your feet don’t look like a horror show.
I use these foot peel socks but there are other brands out there that can work well. You can thank me later when you see the results. Honestly I was shocked at how much skin came off my feet and how good they looked after I’d used them. This is the best life hack for your feet not a sanitary pad with gunk on it.
I might start a series of posts debunking viral videos or discussing ones that really work. Tune in to see what else catches my eye the next time I’m scrolling through Instagram, Threads or YouTube.
