Finding comfortable shoes for old ladies with swollen feet can be a challenge. There are only a few suppliers of wide fitting shoes for swollen feet and they can be hard to find so I thought I would collate a list of some of the best footwear there is on the market to make things easier for people.
I know first hand the problems because my mum suffered from swollen feet as she got older and finding something to fit her was a real challenge especially as it was in the days before the internet really took off.
Luckily it is easier to find shoes and sandals that can fit now provided you have access to websites so here are some of my top choices for elderly women.

Shoes For Elderly Women With Swollen Feet
I’m going to start my pick with what I would call ordinary shoes for women with swollen feet. So what does that mean?
Well as an example I sometimes get a swollen foot from tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. When that happens my foot swells by a half to full size more than my other. That means I need shoes that can accommodate the swelling and that are comfortable.
I’ll give a separate section below for extra wide shoes that work for feet that are even larger because of fluid build up.
I have a separate post discussing the best shoes to wear after hip replacement surgery which might also be of use depending on the reason for the problem.
Itazero Wide Fit Shoes
These lace up shoes are perfect for you if you have mild to moderate swollen feet. Not only are they wide they have a slip on design that makes them easy to put on.
As the shoes are made from a stretch fabric they can expand with your feet and the laces allow you to adjust them so you can get the best comfortable fit. So if one foot is larger than the other you can adjust the laces so it is not particularly noticeable.
These also have an arch support insole which is important if the reason for your swollen feet is because of issues like plantar fasciitis.
Plus these are lightweight and breathable which means they are good in the warmer weather and prevent sweat build up.
I also love that they look like ordinary shoes rather than specially made shoes for problem feet which can sometimes be ugly.
Ortho+rest Women Shoes with Adjustable Closure
These casual trainer style shoes have an adjustable strap with a hook and loop closure that makes these great shoes to use if you have a swollen foot.
Again if one foot is a different size to the other you can adjust the strapping to make them work for you.
The makes give you two extra insoles as well with one for comfort and another for arch support which means you can get a more bespoke fit.
These are good for grip as well on most surfaces however they are not water resistant so bear that in mind if you are looking for shoes that you can cope with bad weather.
Oviaric Women’s Classic Comfort Mary Jane Flats
Sadly dressy shoes are hard to come by when you have swollen feet but these do come in a range of colors including pewter which makes them look a little smarter.
These are made from soft leather which does stretch over time. Remember that wide fit stretchy materials may work better depending on how swollen the persons feet are.
The good thing about these shoes is the adjustable velcro tab allows them to be easily adjusted which is going to make them much easier to wear. Plus these can be worn outside in the rain.
Extra Wide Shoes For Elderly Women
Youyun Women’s X-Wide Shoes
Sometimes ordinary shoes are not enough and you need footwear that is extra wide fitting like these shoes.
These slip on shoes are not only wide fitting but also have extra depth as well making them easier to wear.
I like the fact that the sides and the tongue of the shoes can be moved to allow you to put your foot into the shoes more easily. The adjustable strap then allows you to do adjustments to fit.
You can wear these outside because of the rubber sole and there is cushioning as well to make them more comfortable.
JBTNBX Women’s Extra Wide Widths Adjustable Sneakers
These shoes come in standard sizes as well as wide or extra wide so if you have particularly swollen feet these are perfect. You can also size up if you need as well to get the perfect fit for you.
The adjustable design makes them easy to adjust and because there are two straps you can bet a better fit.
The insoles on these are memory foam and have an arch support which is useful if you need it to help with foot pain and plantar fasciitis.
Sandals for Elderly Women With Swollen Feet
When the weather is warmer sandals are often preferable to closed toe shoes so I have included a couple of pairs to give you an idea of what may work.
Sadly the more swollen your feet are the less elegant the designs but they are practical which is more important when you are buy shoes for old ladies with swollen feet.
Silvert’s Open Toed Sandals for Seniors
These come in a range of different colors so you don’t have to stick with the cream color.
What I like about these is that the velcro strap is adjustable making the sandals really easy to take on and off. By adjusting the strap these can fit your foot shape more easily.
The shoes are also anti-slip which means that they are easier to walk around in.
JIONS Adjustable Velcro Extra Wide Sandals
Alternatively these Jions in black also work really well.
These are great because they are not only adjustable at the front but also the back as well making the right fit much easier to achieve.
The memory foam insoles are going to help with comfort and support which is important. Plus they are washable which makes them really easy to maintain.
Why Swollen Feet are a Concern
When you have swollen feet it is much harder to walk around and participate in normal daily activities which can obviously detrimentally impact a persons life.
Swollen feet can be caused by a number of different health problems such as fluid retention, diabetes, plantar fasciitis and other issues. Fluid build up in particular can be particularly problematic as the feet swelling can be severe.
When your feet swell significantly this can lead to pressure, discomfort and sores on the feet. This means that ordinary shoes and sandals may not longer be appropriate for that person which means that adjustable closures and wide fitting shoes with a larger toe box are usually needed to accommodate the swelling.
The Importance of Choosing the Right Shoes
From my experiences with my mother it can be difficult to find the right shoes that helps with mobility and independence.
Although some of the shoes I have chosen are not particularly fashionable I found that aesthetics or style don’t matter then you want help with pain and discomfort.
Any shoes that work should be considered especially when a person has very swollen feet because without them their ability to carry on living a normal life is hampered.
Shoes with wide toe boxes, in soft materials and with adjustable closures are game changers for the elderly and will help enhance blood flow and decrease the changes of fluid build-up becoming worse. However choose the wrong shoes and you risk aggravating any existing problems.
Features to Look for in Shoes for Swollen Feet
There are certain features that you need to look out for it you are hunting for shoes for old women with swollen feet. The most important are:
Wide Toe Box – A swollen foot is going to need more room to prevent blisters and pressure spots. Make sure your choices allow the foot to sit in the shoe comfortably without being cramped.
Soft Uppers – Choose shoes that have soft uppers as these will not aggravate any swelling and will mold to the persons foot shape.
Deep Toe Box – A deep toe box as well as a wide one helps as a swollen foot expands upwards as well as in width.
Adjustable Closures – Adjustable closures are essential as they not make it easier for shoes to be put on they also mean that footwear can be tightened to the perfect fit.
Anti-Slip – As balance issues can also be a problem for elderly people then I also like anti-slip shoes for added safety when walking in or outdoors.
Breathable Materials – Finally breathable materials matter as they prevent sweat build up and keep the foot comfortable.
Socks and Accessories to Enhance Comfort
Don’t forget that you can use socks and other foot health accessories to help make feet and footwear more comfortable.
Extra wide compression socks can be helpful to minimize swelling. It can be hard to find large sizes that work but these Gooi Extra Wide Socks will work for many people.
Leg massagers can also work depending on the problem to help increase blood flow and lessen swelling.
Finding Footwear For Swollen Feet is Easier Than Ever
When I used to look for products for my mum to help her swollen feet it was difficult to find footwear that would fit however now there are plenty of options around if you head online.
Buying shoes for old ladies for swollen feet now is less of a problem because manufacturers have created more wide width shoes in better materials to make them more comfortable to wear.
Whilst you might not find these on the high street or in malls there are plenty of manufacturers online who can help and who have create whole ranges to cater for problem feet. Hopefully my selection has shown you what is available when you look and shown how they can improve a persons quality of life.
