Loafers are one of my favourite styles of footwear because they are easy to walk in and look good. So I thought I would write about how to style chunky loafers in particular because there are some great ones about at the moment.
Whilst I wear loafers all year around autumn and winter is a great time to bring out the chunkier styles. Why? Well they have great tread which gives you the extra traction you need in the wetter weather and they are great at keeping your feet dry because they are elevated (less splashback from muddy puddles).
Chunky loafers tend to also offer more on trend styles whilst traditional flatter loafers make me feel more put together. Here are five ways that I think work great with this look for you to try.

How to Style Chunky Loafers With Jeans
Chunky loafers are one of my favourite shoes to wear with a simple jeans outfit because they instantly make casual denim feel more a little more considered.
I like to start with straight-leg or slightly cropped jeans as the cleaner line balances the thicker sole without hiding it. If your jeans are a little long, give them a small roll so your loafers stay visible. From there, you can keep things relaxed with a classic T-shirt or add structure with a blazer if you want something sharper. The contrast between a tailored top half and an easy pair of jeans gives the loafers room to shine.
When I want a slightly more polished look, I swap in darker denim and pair it with a tucked-in shirt or lightweight knit. Even a simple striped tee works. Chunky loafers have a way of making basics feel intentional.
Accessories make a difference, too. A clean leather belt and a crossbody bag help pull the whole outfit together. The key is to treat chunky loafers as a style anchor. They’re comfortable, practical and add just the right hint of edge, whether you’re heading to coffee, the office or a weekend market.

Wearing Loafers Socks and a Mini Skirt
This next look actually isn’t something that I would wear because I’m don’t have the legs for it anymore but if you do then wearing loafers socks and a mini skirt is a great look.
This style is fun and a little preppy, but still very wearable day-to-day. Start with a simple mini in denim, wool, or pleated (these all work) and let the loafers ground the look.
Socks add personality and help bridge the gap between the shoe and hemline. Whether you go for a classic neutral sock or something with subtle texture, it creates a finished feel that’s more styled than bare legs alone. Alternatively go for a really colorful or striking sock to make a statement.
From there, you can take the outfit in different directions. A relaxed sweater keeps things cosy and casual, while a structured blazer makes it feel smarter without losing the playful edge. This combination is young and modern and can be practical for transitional seasons.

Wearing Chunky Loafers With Tailored Trousers
Whilst my mini skirt days might be behind me I am definitely on board with the next tip which is to wear my chunky loafers with some tailored trousers. This is the ultimate look that makes me feel put-togethre without me trying too hard.
I usually go for straight or slightly cropped trousers so the loafers aren’t hidden. Showing a bit of ankle or sock keeps things neat and stops the outfit from looking too heavy. From there, I’ll just add a simple shirt or knit and I’m pretty much done as it looks like I’ve made an effort, even if I haven’t.
If I want it to feel a little smarter, I’ll throw on a blazer or a cardigan and maybe a belt to pull everything together. Honestly, that’s all it takes. The loafers add a nice, modern edge to the trousers without feeling flashy, and the whole look works whether I’m heading into work or just grabbing a coffee. It’s comfortable, unfussy, and always looks good which is why I keep coming back to it.

With a Midi Skirt
Whilst mini skirts are not longer my thing midi skirts are something that I can get on board with. They look great with chunky loafers because they give a bit of weight to the outfit. The loafers balance the longer skirt without making it feel too dressy.
Most midi styles should work from pleated, satin or even knitted and if you can get the skirt to hit around mid-calf so that the loafers are still visible. It’s a really simple way to create a look and doesn’t need much styling to look good.
On top, I’ll usually go for a tucked-in T-shirt or a light jumper. If I want it a little smarter, I’ll add a blazer, but it’s definitely not essential. A small bag or a belt is enough to finish things off. It’s the kind of outfit I’ll wear for lunch, the office, or just running around town. Nothing complicated just a straightforward mix that works without much thought.

With a Casual Dress
Finally last but not least how about wearing your chunky loafers with a dress? This style of shoes really helps a dress from feeling too “done” and also makes your look more relaxed and practical for every day.
Shirt dresses, sweater dress and printed day dresses all work. I just choose whatever feels right for my mood and the season. It’s one of those outfits that’s really easy to wear and makes you look like you have made an effort when you haven’t tried very hard.
Sometimes I’ll add a light jacket or cardigan if I want an extra layer, but most of the time the dress and loafers are enough. A simple bag and maybe tights if it’s cooler, and I’m out the door. It’s comfortable, looks put-together, and works for all sorts of days from coffee runs and casual errands to work. It’s a nice mix of easy and tidy without feeling too formal.

Learning How to Wear Chunky Loafers Doesn’t Have to Be Difficult
Learning how to style chunky loafers is really about finding what feels good on you. You don’t need to overthink it. Start with the clothes you already wear most and swap in the loafers to see what works. Jeans, trousers, skirts, dresses. They all take on a slightly neater look with loafers, without feeling too formal. Once you get used to the shape, it becomes second nature to build outfits around them.
Remember there aren’t any strict rules. Some days you might wear them with tailored trousers, other days with a simple dress. You can keep things plain and minimal, or add socks and layers if you want more detail. The more you wear them, the more you’ll find your own rhythm and favourite combinations. They’re comfortable, easy to mix into your wardrobe, and they work across seasons which is probably why so many of us keep reaching for them.
