After a long day on my feet I often create a homemade foot soak to use at home. I find it is the best way to help soothe my tired muscles and keep my feet staying soft. Plus it can help draw out impurities which helps with my foot health.

Why Your Feet Need a Detox Homemade Foot Soak
Feet are often neglected when it comes to beauty and self-care routines but they are actually super important. Think about the amount of pressure and friction they are under every day as they support you when you walk.
Add to that the fact that you are likely to put them in shoes which are cramped and damp. Then they get a build up of dead skin cells, sweat, dirt and bacteria that can cause dryness, discomfort and foot odor. When you think about it your feet are one fo the first things you should be looking after not the last!
Using a detox foot soak has so many benefits:

Muscle and Joint Relief: Warm water and mineral salts can help relax your muscles, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation.

Skin Softening: Natural exfoliants remove those dead skin cells, help smooth rough patches, and make your feet softer.

Impurity Extraction: Certain clays and salts can pull out toxins, excess oils, and debris from the skin’s surface.

Calming Aromatherapy: If you use herbs and essential oils in the soak you soothe both your feet and your mind as well.
I try and do a foot soak at least once a week. When I do them regularly I find that I get fewer calluses, less foot pain and my feet feet fresher and lighter. Plus in the summer it means I don’t fear having to expose my feet in sandals.
Ingredients You’ll Need
If you want to create a homemade foot soak this is the recipe I use. You can of course swap out the essential oils for something different if you want. Just remember to be cautious trying any home remedy if you have any medical issues such as diabetes or foot problems. Talk to a healtcare professional first to be on the safe side.
Coarse Sea Salt (½ cup):
This helps to draw out impurities, soothes any sore muscles you have and also can reduce inflammation.
Bentonite Clay (2 tablespoons):
This binds to any toxins and unwanted minerals on the skin.
Fresh Lemon Juice (2 tablespoons, about ½ a lemon):
Lemon juice can exfoliate dead skin and also brighten it.
Dried Lavender or Chamomile Flowers (1 tablespoon):
I tend to use lavender because I love the smell. Both of these flowers have mild antibacterial properties.
Epsom Salt (optional, ¼ cup):
Adds extra magnesium sulfate to promote deeper muscle relaxation and joint relief. I find it is also helpful to reduce muscle cramps.
Peppermint or Eucalyptus Essential Oil (4–6 drops):
If your feet are tired both of these essential oils give a really cooling feeling and uplifting smell.
Sturdy Basin or Foot Tub:
Obviously you are going to need a foot basin as well to place all the ingredients in. I love this one because it collapses down which saves on space.
Create a Homemade Foot Soak – Step-by-Step Guide
Think about where you are going to sit for at least 20 minutes. I usually position my foot basin on a towel by my bedroom chair
When you are ready fill your basin with warm water. Check how hot it is before you put your feet in it. Then stir in your sea salt and epsom salt and let them dissolve.
Then sprinkle 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay into the water. If your clay has clumps, break them apart with your fingers or a small spoon. Stir gently until the clay is evenly distributed. As it dissolves, you’ll notice the water turning slightly cloudy but this is perfectly normal.
Juice half a lemon (about 2 tablespoons) directly into the basin. The citric acid helps to soften any rough patches and brighten your skin. You can also float a couple of thin lemon slices on the water’s surface if you are feeling fancy.
Finally drop in 1 tablespoon of dried lavender or chamomile flowers and add 4–6 drops of peppermint or eucalyptus essential oil. Swirl the water gently so the oils and flowers disperse evenly.
Now put your feet into the warm water and just relax. I tend to read a book or an ipad whilst I’m waiting for the foot soak to do it’s job.
When you have finished take your feet out of the water and use a foot file to get rid of any dead skin and smooth any calluses.
Rinse your feet with fresh, lukewarm water. Pat them dry with a soft towel and then slather on some foot cream to moisturize your feet.
Ingredient Variations & Substitutions
As I mentioned there are variations that you can make to the foot soak if you want.

Bentonite Clay Alternative: If you don’t have bentonite, finely ground colloidal oats (⅓ cup) can act as a mild exfoliant and skin soother.

Salt Swaps: If sea salt feels too coarse, use Himalayan pink salt or kosher salt. Both still deliver beneficial minerals.

Essential Oil Mixes: Combine lavender with a drop of frankincense for deeper relaxation, or try a citrus blend (orange + lemon) to uplift your mood.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How hot should the water be?
Aim for a temperature that’s comfortably warm. It should feel soothing, not scalding. If you have sensitive skin or circulation issues, err on the cooler side.
Q: Can I do this soak every day?
While you could most people don’t have the time and energy. Plus daily soaks may strip natural oils from your skin. Once a week is usually enough.
Q: I have sensitive skin. Should I skip the lemon juice?
If your skin reacts easily to citrus, omit the lemon and increase the bentonite clay or try a milder exfoliant like finely ground oatmeal. You can still enjoy the salts and herbs for muscle relief and relaxation.
Q: Is bentonite clay safe for all skin types?
Bentonite clay is generally safe and gentle, but if you have a skin condition (like psoriasis or eczema), patch-test a small amount on your forearm first to ensure you don’t have any sensitivity.
