So if you fancy doing something rewarding to pamper yourself with then here’s everything you need to know about creating one of these for yourself.

Benefits of Using Coconut Oil for Foot Care
Coconut oil is one of my absolute favorite ingredients because of its versatility. I use it to help tame my curly hair, I also use it with essential oils for massage products as well as putting it in my foot products so I get my moneysworth. Using coconut oil for toenail fungus can also work if you want a natural way to solve the problem.
When it comes to foot care recipes it works because it is moisturizing which means it is perfect for softening dry or cracked heels. As it is filled with natural fatty acids it can help to nourish and protect your skin.
Plus it is antibacterial and antifungal so it’s great for foot health as well.
Oh and I should mention that it doesn’t cost the earth which is great when you are on a budget.
Simple Ingredients for a DIY Coconut Oil Foot Scrub
I like to make a foot scrub that is large enough to fit in a small jar. This scrub will last me around a month depending on how often I use it.
Just gather together the following ingredients.
- 1/2 cup of coconut oil – This hydrates and nourishes your dry skin.
- 1 cup of sugar (I like brown) or salt – To help remove dead skin.
- 15–20 drops of essential oil (optional) – Add a scent such as lavender, peppermint or tea tree.
- 1–2 tablespoons of honey (optional) – This also helps increase moisture and is antibacterial.
I have a guide to the best essential oils for feet that you can use to help you make a decision on what to add to your scrub.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making A Coconut Oil Foot Scrub
Making your own homemade coconut oil foot scrub isn’t difficult if you follow these instructions:
Melt the Coconut Oil (If Solid)
If your coconut oil is solid warm it up by gently heating it. You can do this by placing the coconut oil jar in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes or microwaving it in short bursts (10–15 seconds at a time) until it becomes liquid.
If it’s already liquid, you can skip this step.
Mix the Ingredients
In a medium-sized bowl, combine 1/2 cup of melted coconut oil with 1 cup of sugar or salt.
Stir the ingredients together until fully combined. The sugar will give the scrub its exfoliating power, while the coconut oil creates a moisturizing base. If you like a coarser texture, opt for salt, but if you prefer something gentler, brown sugar is my choice!
Add Essential Oils
Drop 15–20 drops of essential oil into the mixture.
Stir well to evenly distribute the scent throughout the scrub. Peppermint oil offers a refreshing, cooling effect, lavender oil has a calming, relaxing scent, and tea tree oil has natural antibacterial properties that are great for keeping feet fresh.
Add Honey for Extra Moisture
If you want a deeper moisturizing effect, add 1–2 tablespoons of honey to the mixture.
Mix Until Smooth
Stir everything together until you have a well-mixed, consistent scrub. The sugar or salt should be evenly distributed, and the texture should feel smooth yet slightly gritty to the touch. This helps with exfoliation while still feeling soft.
Store Your Scrub
Transfer the scrub to a clean, airtight jar or container for storage. A small glass jar with a lid works perfectly.
Store your scrub in a cool, dry place. Since coconut oil is naturally stable, your foot scrub will stay good for several weeks. Just give it a quick stir before each use, as the ingredients may settle or separate slightly over time.
How to Use Your Scrub for Soft, Smooth Feet
I tend to use my scrubs about once or twice a week which should be more than enough unless you have very dry cracked skin. If this is the case you may need to consider some other treatments first before use a homemade coconut oil foot scrub as maintenance.
To use this type of scrub here’s my typical routine:
Prepare Your Feet
Start by soaking your feet in warm water for about 5–10 minutes. This helps soften the skin and makes exfoliation more effective. If you don’t have a basin, simply use the scrub directly on dry or damp feet in the shower.
Apply the Scrub
Scoop out a small amount of the coconut oil foot scrub (about a tablespoon per foot) and apply it to one foot at a time.
Massage Gently
Using your fingers, massage the scrub into your feet in circular motions.
Focus on the rough areas, like your heels, toes, and the balls of your feet. The sugar or salt exfoliates while the coconut oil moisturizes.
Rinse Off
Rinse your feet thoroughly with warm water to wash away the scrub. Make sure no slippery oil residue is left on your feet.
Pat Dry
Gently pat your feet dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing, as this can irritate freshly exfoliated skin.
Moisturize (Optional)
I personally always like to use a good moisturizer on my feet like O’Keeffe’s foot cream after I’ve used a foot scrub. This is because it helps to really soften my feet. I also tend to pop on a pair of socks and wear them overnight if I am doing this in the evening.
Tips for Storing and Preserving Your Homemade Foot Scrub
Finally I thought it was worth mentioning how you should store this scrub.
As I mentioned earlier I use an airtight container like a glass jar with a lid to put mine in. I then store the jar in a cool dry place away from heat or sunlight.
When I use the scrub I am careful not to let water get into the container because that can spoil it by introducing bacteria and mold.
If you live in a warm climate or don’t plan to use the scrub quickly, refrigerate it. This helps extend its shelf life and keeps the coconut oil solid.
Think about throwing it away if them small changes, you see changes in the texture, smell or color or if there is any visible sign of mold or contamination.
Personally I keep mine for a month and after that I get rid of any left and then wash out the jar to use again.
