Autumn is just around the corner so I’m organizing my closet to get ready for the wetter and cooler days. I’m currently looking at creating a capsule wardrobe for fall work shoes so that I have comfortable footweart that is perfect for all-day wear that also looks put together enough for the office and meetings.
Fall can be tricky month because mornings are cold, but by the afternoon it can still be warm, so I like having options that cover all kinds of weather. Here’s what I look for in work shoes for fall, and some styles that always work for me.

Work Loafers For Fall
Loafers are one of my favorite work shoes for fall. They’re easy to slip on, comfortable enough to wear all day, and they go with trousers, jeans, or even dresses.
I like ones with a cushioned insole and a bit of structure. Leather loafers are my go to because they are easier to maintain and work well when I want something more polished.
For really cold weather I tend to prefer a chunkier sole because they give me extra traction when I’m walking around outside. However the thinner soles do look a little more refined for work.
If you are going to buy some stick with neutral shades like black, tan and brown so that you are able to match your outfits more easily.

Wearing Ballet Shoes For Work
Ballet flats are another go-to for fall, especially when I don’t want to wear anything bulky.
I know some people find them too flat or unsupportive, but I look for ones with arch support and a little padding.
They’re lightweight, and I like how they make any outfit look clean and simple. Ballet shoes are fine to wear in light rain but make sure they are made from leather so your feet don’t get wet. For really wet days I revert to loafers or bring a pair to change into which I can slip on in the office.
The other thing I love about ballet shoes is that they work well outside the office as well which means I can wear them on an evening out when I have finished work. Shoes that multi-task are always a bonus.

Closed Toe Mules For Fall Workwear
I’ve added closed toe mules for fall workwear but I should add these aren’t suitable for every office environment. Older or stuffier organisations like banks or law firms prefer traditional shoes so give them a miss if you work in this type of environment. If like me you are able to wear something a little more casual then they are great for early fall.
I used to think mules were more of a spring or summer shoe, but there are a lot of great fall versions out now. I like closed-toe mules for this time of year because they still feel open but give more coverage than a sandal.
I wear them with tailored trousers or even midi skirts. They’re easy to slip off and on, which is convenient for days when I’m in and out of the house or office. The key is finding a pair with a solid sole and enough grip for rainy pavements.

Slingback Shoes With Low To Mid Heels
Slingbacks definitely give you a more dressed-up look without being uncomfortable especially if you choose ones with a low to medium heel. I never recommend super high heels for work so stick to heels that you can wear all day without any pain.
Their open back helps with breathability which is great on warmer fall days however they are less useful when the weather turns colder and wetter.
Wear them with tailored pants, pencil skirts and smart dresses if you are in the office. For nights out just put on a pair of jeans and they will still look great.

Mary-Jane Shoes Flats and Heels
Mary Janes are back in style and they actually make great work shoes. Just make sure the shoes don’t make you look like an overgrown baby doll.
Flat soles look better for formal office so save the chunky sole varieties for your life outside of the office. Wear them with tights and dresses, skirts and trousers in the office.
The reason I love Mary-janes is that the strap helps to keep my foot secure which is great if you walk alot. Just beware if you have wider feet or swelling as the strap can make them harder to wear.

Kitten Heels For the Mad Men Look
I don’t wear high heels every day, but kitten heels are a good compromise when I want a bit of lift without the pain. They’re easier to walk in and still feel professional.
For fall, I go for ones in suede or leather because they feel more seasonal and tend to hold up better in cooler weather. I usually wear them on days when I have meetings or need to look more put-together. I like a pointed toe for a cleaner look.
I forever associate this look with Joan from Mad Men who looked a million dollars in them when she strutted around the office.

Medium Heel Pumps For Office Wear
If you are only going to buy one pair of shoes that works in the office then let it be a pair of black medium heeled pumps. These are the perfect shoes as they are dressy and smart and work well in both formal and informal offices plus you can wear them in your day to day life as well.
Anything around 2 inches works well for me. I try to find ones with padding inside and a block heel for extra stability.
Black pumps are also hugely versatile and work with just about any outfit, from dresses to tailored trousers.
Just try and avoid very high heels in the office because they just aren’t worth the discomfort plus they look a little cheap. A solid, wearable heel makes a big difference on long workdays.

Ankle Boots For The Office
Finally last but not least I had to mention ankle books which are great for colder fall weather. They keep my feet warm, they go with everything, and they come in so many styles.
I have flat ones for casual days and heeled ones for when I want to look more dressed up. I always make sure they have a comfortable footbed and enough room in the toe box.
Leather or waterproof materials are great if it might rain. I usually go for black or taupe because they’re easy to style, but I also have a burgundy pair that adds a bit of color to plain outfits that works well for Autumn looks.

What I Look for in Fall Footwear For Work
No matter the style, I always check for a few things before buying work shoes for fall:
- Comfort: Padding, arch support, and the right fit
- Versatility: Can I wear them with multiple outfits?
- Weather suitability: Will they hold up in light rain or colder mornings?
- Quality: I’d rather buy one good pair than a few that fall apart after one season
Having a few go-to styles that you know work makes getting dressed in the morning much easier. Fall is a great time to refresh your shoe lineup with pairs that are comfortable, work-friendly, and match your personal style. Whether you’re heading to the office, working from home, or doing a mix of both, the right shoes can make a big difference in how your day feels.
Let me know which fall work shoes you’re wearing most this season or if there are any brands you recommend. I’m always on the lookout for shoes that look good and actually feel good too.
