Have you ever thought about the different styles of boots that are out there on the market and realised the overwhelming choices you have for winter footwear? Boots are so much more than just footwear, they are a fashion staple and also practical especially in the colder weather so I thought I would do a post on some of the most popular styles out there that you can buy at the moment.
It doesn’t matter if you are dressing up for an evening out, preparing for winter weather or pulling together a casual day look, the right pair of boots can completely transform your outfit.
There are so many options available so I thought I would take about each styles unique qualities so you can see the options available to you.
Here are some of my favourite styles, their features and how you wear them.

Over the Knee Boots For Bolder Looks
Over the knee boots are ones that extend well above you kneed creating a dramatic look that can’t be ignored. You’ll find this style is popular in both flat and heeled variations in leather, suede or sometimes stretch fabrics.
These boots are perfect for pairing with shorter hemlines, skinny jeans, or oversized sweaters. Many fashion enthusiasts choose them for the striking way they elongate the legs.
I have a love/hate relationship with this look which can be hard to pull off. Choose a heel too high and you look like a stripper or one too low and you could be mistaken for Adam Ant in his dandy highwayman era. These Nine West boots hit the mark and avoid the issues that I see with many people wearing this style.
Personally I think this is a look best left to the young unless you have model style looks and figure. Yes I know there will be plenty who disagree with me but this isn’t a look that is easy to pull off especially if you are over 40.

Knee High Boots For Timeless Versatility
A much safer option are knee high boots which reach just below or at the knee. This is an absolute classic footwear style and works in both high heel and flat styles.
I find that these are really practical for cold weather plus they work well for work and for nights out.
You can obviously buy them in all manner of materials but I prefer to stick with the classics in leather and suede. Wear yours with everything from skirts and dresses to jeans.
I think of them as a reliable investment piece that never really goes out of style.

Riding Boots – Elegant and Equestrian Inspired
Riding boots are another classic wardrobe staple provided you don’t opt for a pair with too many embellishments. These were originally designed for equestrian sports but because of the flat heels and comfort they became popular in the mainstream.
These look great with leggings, skinny jeans and even tailored trousers. Choose the right ones and you have a polished practical style boot that looks sophisticated even when you are wearing casual wear. Think off duty UK Royal family and you’ll get the idea.

Wellington Boots For Waterproofing and Functionality
In the states you might call them rubber boots but in the UK we know them as wellies and they are the perfect footwear for wet and muddy conditions.
They are hugely popular because of their waterproof protection and most people own a pair from young children to older adults.
Once upon a time they came in quite basic styles but recently the designs have changed signficantly and you can now buy colorful, patterned and even designer wellington boots.
Whether you’re attending a rainy outdoor festival, gardening, or just navigating puddles, Wellies are a must-have for functional yet fun footwear.

Platform Boots Extra Height with Comfort
Platform boots are another interesting choice if you want extra height but more comfort. As they have a thick sole that runs across the full length of the boot they distribute your weight more evenly that stilettos or thin heels making them much more comfortable.
This style of boot tends to come in bolder and edgier styles that nod to the retro fashion of the 70’s and then the 90’s.
This design can be wearable but if you are older choose classic looks to avoid looking like you are a former Spice Girl or extra from Austin Powers.

Cowboy Boots For Western Charm
Cowboy boots are not as popular in the UK as they are in The States but I had to mention them especially as there is a bit of a revival of Western fashion at the moment down to artists such as Beyonce.
Cowboy boots are nstantly recognizable with their pointed toes, angled heels, and decorative stitching and come in all types of designs from the classic brown and tan to more colorful and embellished styles. Personally for a luxe look I like to stick to minimalist styles in premium materials like this suede as they make your whole look feel much more expensive.
This type of boot works well with denim (of course), flowy skirts, or boho-inspired outfits.

Slouched Boots For a Relaxed and Casual Look
Slouched boots feature a looser shaft that naturally folds and creases, creating a relaxed appearance. They’re commonly made from soft suede or leather and are available in a range of heel heights.
This laid-back style is a perfect companion for oversized knits, casual dresses, and skinny jeans. Slouched boots add an effortless touch of cool to autumn and winter looks.
Just note that slouched boots are very different from boots that keep falling down and are baggy and saggy. One style is intentional and the other isn’t.

Mid-Calf Boots – The In-Between Choice
Mid-calf boots sit between ankle boots and knee highs and are of course the inbetween choice. They’re versatile enough to dress up or down and come in numerous variations, from chunky heels to flat riding-inspired designs.
They’re particularly great for transitional seasons when ankle boots feel too light, but tall boots feel too heavy. Mid-calf boots are a practical and stylish addition to most wardrobes but beware they can cut off your legs.
If you have wide calves the top of the boot often sits at the widest part of your leg which isn’t always the most flattering. As this is one of my problems I tend to stick with knee highs or ankles boots instead.

Canvas Boots For a Lightweight and Laid-Back Look
Canvas boots are a bit of a twist on traditional boot styles as they really don’t work so well in Winter. Fabric is fine the warmer months but doesn’t hold up so well when it is cold, wet or snowing.
This style of boot can look like combat boots, sneakers or high-tops and they are relatively easy to style with jeans, shorts or casual dresses.
Canvas boots are a great option for anyone looking for versatile, low-maintenance footwear but they don’t function like traditional boots do in colder weather.

Wedge Boots For Extra Stability
Wedge boots are definitely a style that you should turn to if you want height but more stability than you would get with a traditional heeled boot. They are comfortable enough for all-day wear but can also be dressed up.
You can buy this style in ankle, mid-calf, and knee-high designs, wedge boots are perfect for pairing with dresses, skirts, or skinny trousers.
I love them because they are comfortable which to me is one of the most important things I look for now in a boot.

Combat Boots Are Functional and Fashionable
Ok you might think of combat boots as being associated with the military but they are increasingly being worn as a fashion statement.
They work well because they are practical, sturdy and durable so they are perfect for an off-duty casual look.
Think lace-up designs with chunky soles to create that edgy look. Style them with everythint from jeans and leather jackets to floral dresses if you want to contrast the touch and feminine looks.

Biker Boots For a Rugged Edge
In a similar vein biker boots also have that chunky look and are inspired by motorcycle culture hence the name. Again these are stylish and durable and are often adorned with buckles, straps or metallic detaials.
These boots are perfect for adding edge to casual outfits. Pair them with skinny jeans, leather jackets, or oversized layers for a tough, street-style inspired look.
Biker boots can look good at almost every age provided you find the right style and wear them the right outfits.

Block Heeled Boots For Additional Comfort
I’m a big fan of block heeled boots which feature a wider, squared heel that offers more comfort and stability compared to slimmer heels. They come in many styles, including ankle, mid-calf, and knee high designs.
Block heels strike a balance between elegance and wearability, making them a go-to for day-to-night outfits. They’re perfect for occasions when you want added height without sacrificing comfort if you are wearing heels.
I think that block heels often add a little extra interest to a boot and they seem to be particularly on trend recently.

Peep Toe Boots For the Fashion Forward
Peep toe boots are a fusion of classic designs and open toed shoes. Unlike traditional boots that fully cover the foot, these feature a small cut-out at the toe, making them a fashionable choice for transitional seasons.
They’re often made with stiletto heels, block heels, or wedges, giving them a dressy edge that works well for nights out, date nights, or fashion-forward day looks. Popular in leather, suede, and even patent finishes, peep toe boots add a playful twist to skirts, dresses, and skinny jeans.
Because they expose part of the foot, peep toe boots are less practical for cold or wet weather but that’s exactly what makes them perfect for spring and autumn styling. Pair them with cropped trousers, midi skirts, or bodycon dresses for a look that balances sophistication with a touch of edge.

Clog Boots Are Retro with a Twist
Clog boots combine the chunky wooden sole of a clog with the coverage of a boot. They’re unique, eye-catching, and often associated with vintage-inspired or bohemian fashion.
Whether in suede, leather, or with added embellishments, clog boots stand out as a bold choice that links retro appeal with modern style.
I personally am not a great fan but that’s because I tend to find clogs too hard on my feet as I want a little cushioning when I walk. If you find a hybrid go for that instead as your feet will thank you in the long run.

Shearling Boots Are Cozy and Warm
Shearling boots are lined with soft sheepskin or faux shearling, making them the ultimate in cozy footwear. Known for their warmth and comfort, they’re especially popular in colder climates.
They can range from casual slip-ons to more structured designs, offering both style and practicality for winter wear. Shearling boots pair well with casual, cozy outfits like leggings, jeans, and oversized sweaters.
I’m a fan of shearling inside winter boots for extra warmth especially if you live somewhere which is really cold and snowy.

Hiking Boots – Durable and Supportive Footwear
If you are a fan of the outdoors then a pair of hiking boots are a must. These are designed for outdoor adventures and give you support, traction and durability. Buy ones that have cushioning, ankle support and of course waterproof.
While practical, hiking boots have also crossed over into fashion, often styled with streetwear for a rugged, outdoorsy vibe. They’re an essential for anyone who enjoys exploring trails or simply loves the utility-inspired look.
I’m a bit fan of the sneaker, hiking boot hybrids that brands like Sorel offer.

Snow Boots – Winter Essentials
In the UK I have a pair of snow boots and they have been worn only a handful of times over the past few years because our climate is relatively mild.
If however you live somewhere where the conditions are icy or snowy then these are essential. Buy ones with insulated linings, waterproof exteriors and of course heavy-duty traction.
Perfect for harsh winters, snow boots keep feet warm and dry in even the coldest environments. Fashion-forward brands now produce stylish snow boots that balance practicality with trend appeal.

Chelsea Boots – For Classic Style
Chelsea boots are ankle-height with elastic side panels, making them easy to slip on and off. They have a clean, streamlined design that works across casual and formal outfits.
Originally popularized in the Victorian era, Chelsea boots remain one of the most versatile boot styles available today. Pair them with jeans, skirts, or tailored trousers for a polished, timeless look.
You can get Chelsea boots with heels but I prefer the flat or low heeled look in premium leather as it never dates.

Well there’s my pick of the different styles of boots that are the most popular at the moment. From rugged combat styles to knee highs there is a boot for every season, occasion and personal fashion preference.
