Apparently, the average woman owns between 20 to 30 pairs of shoes, but only wears about 6 or 7 of them regularly. Sound familiar? Why on earth do we all own so many shoes we never actually wear?
Well I know that some of my extensive collection are seasonal or shoes I’m keeping for sentimental reasons (looking at you, Terry De Haviland Platforms that I wore for my wedding), but honestly I have far too many.
I have to admit that some of this comes down to some of my shoes hurt, others don’t go with anything I own or were bought in a moment of “this looks cute” when really they didn’t.
So I decided it was time to curate a capsule shoe wardrobe. Not because I wanted to be boring or restrictive but because I was sick of wasting money on shoes I would never wear. Plus I’m moving house so it seems pointless packing lots of shoes thatI have no intention of ever wearing again.
Having a smaller selection is actually smarter because I’m know that these are styles I am going to wear them again and again. The right footwear makes it easier to get dressed, helps you avoid expensive regret purchases, and honestly it just feels good to open your wardrobe and not be overwhelmed by chaos.
Here’s what I decided what is coming with me and what I need to buy for my new shoe collection at my new house. Use it as inspiration to curate your own must have shoe collection that works for every outfit and season.

Fashion Sneakers
Let’s start with an obvious choice which is on trend comfy sneakers you can wear with pretty much anything.
I’m a big fan at the moment of white leather or neutral designs that are clean and minimal so they match just about everything.
When looking for the right ones make sure they work for errands, casual days, travel, and even dressed-down office looks. If you don’t already live in them, you soon will because they are comfortable and are so easy to wear.
I’m currently loving this design but you are really spoilt for choice at the moment as the sneaker market is full of great styles.

Neutral Ballet Pumps
Frankly I own too many ballet pumps but they are some of the easiest and comfiest shoes I own.
They are comfortable, lightweight and a smarter alternative to sneakers.
My closet is full of black pairs but you could choose another neutral color to with with your jeans, skirts and dresses.
My top tip is to spend a little extra to get that all important extra cushioning and arch support so that your feet feel like you are walking on clouds.

Black Heeled Pumps
If you want to look smart and put together you can never go wrong with a pair of black heeled pumps.
These are the shoes that can take you from weddings to interviews, dinners or any event where you need to look smart.
Always pick something timeless with a pointed or almond toe. Choose a mid to high heel but don’t go super trendy. When you find a comfy pair buy two as you can wear them over and over.

Knee High Boots
Knee high boots are a winter wardrobe essential. These are amazing over skinny jeans, under midi skirts or dresses, or layered with tights.
Go for leather or suede in black or brown, whatever suits your style. They instantly make you look styled, even if you’re wearing the same jumper and jeans for the third day in a row.
If like me you have wide calves don’t worry as finally the fashion world has woken up to the legions of us who want stylish boots to fit. Take a look at my post on how to alter boots for wide calves.

Chelsea Boots
At least with Chelsea boots you’ll never have to worry about whether they will fit your calves.
These are probably my most-worn shoe in autumn and winter. I wear a flat or low heel with a chunky sole.
They are easy to slip on, and they somehow manage to look both cool and classic. They go with everything from jeans and chunky knits to dresses and tights. If you only add one boot to your wardrobe, make it a Chelsea.

Heeled Ankle Boots
A slightly dressier alternative to your Chelseas but great if you are planning on a smarter night out in winter.
Wear these when you want to elevate an outfit but don’t want to wear full heels.
I love them with midi skirts, wide-leg trousers, or even with opaque tights and a mini dress for evenings out. Choose a block heel for extra comfort.

Classic Loafers
These are the ultimate “I’ve got my life together” shoe. Loafers are smart but not stuffy, and they work brilliantly for work, weekend, or travel.
Go for a sleek black or tan leather pair and you’ll be surprised how often you reach for them. I wear mine with straight-leg jeans, trousers, and even floaty dresses for contrast.
The great thing about loafers is that they are perfect for the cooler temperatures, really comfortable and keep your feet dry when its raining.

Flat Sandals
When summer arrives these are essential. Think simple leather sandals in tan, black, or white which are easy to pair with everything from shorts to flowy dresses.
Bonus if they’re supportive enough to walk in for hours. I like to choose ones with straps to keep my feet secure and plenty of cushioning so I can wear them all day. Your feet will thank you on holidays or heatwave days.

Heeled Sandals
When the weather gets warmer then of course you need some sandals in your capsule shoe wardrobe.
Heeled sandals are going to be your summer equivalent of black pumps. Look for a clean, minimal pair of heeled sandals will take you to weddings, dinners, and parties without looking over-the-top.
I love a block heel or small kitten heel so that I can actually walk in them.
Black always works of course but for summer you could also look for metallic neutrals like gold or silver or sandals in nude tones that go with everything. Anna Wintour swears by her Monolo’s so look for something similar without the huge price tag.

Classic Mules
Mules are the unsung heroes of transitional dressing. They’re effortless, stylish, and easy to throw on when it’s too warm for boots but not quite sandal season.
You can go flat or heeled, depending on your vibe. These tend to be great with cropped trousers, midi skirts, or jeans when you want something that feels a bit more put-together than a sandal.
I should add that although I have added these to my list beware if you aren’t that steady on your feet. If you need something more supportive stick with sandals with straps.
Fericzot Mule Slippers for Women
Workout Sneakers
Finally last but not least you need some workout sneakers.
These are not to be confused with your fashion trainers, these are for actual movement. Whether it’s walking the dog, doing a workout, or just being on your feet all day, having a solid pair of supportive workout shoes is a must.
Treat your feet kindly and they’ll carry you through everything.

What’s in Your Capsule Footwear Collection?
This list works really well for most wardrobes, but obviously, you can tweak it to suit your lifestyle. If you’re outdoorsy, maybe add some hiking boots. If you’re constantly at parties, maybe swap in a statement heel. It’s about what works for you, not ticking boxes.
If you’re looking at your current shoe collection and thinking “yep, time for a refresh,” this is a great place to start. Fewer shoes, more outfits and a lot less decision fatigue.
