Flip-flops can either make your feet feel liberated, cool, and free or they can be uncomfortable and a huge source of irritation because of rubbing. Here’s how you can prevent blisters from occurring when you wear them so that you can walk in comfort.

How to Prevent Blisters From Flip-Flops
Ok I’ll start with the most obvious solution which I should have realized years ago. Cheap flip-flops just like any cheap footwear are going to cause foot problems.
Why did I ever think that I could buy a pair of flip-flops that were around the price of a couple of cups of coffee back in the day and expect them to be comfortable?
Cheap flip-flops are often poorly made, use harder plastic, have less cushioning and sometimes have rough sections, especially around the toe posts. So a simple solution is to buy better flip-flop brands that have taken the time to think about their customer’s feet and comfort.
This is why brands like FitFlops have become so huge. Yes, they are more expensive than a pair of flip-flops that you will buy in a supermarket or discount store but they will last significantly longer and they won’t be anywhere near as painful.
With brands like FitFlops you will find that you wear be able to wear them for long periods because they are designed for wearing all day.
Blister Between Toes From Flip-Flops
If you are a person who gets blisters in between their toes because they rub then you have a number of solutions you can use to prevent blisters.
I’ve already mentioned buying better quality footwear but you could look at getting a pair of flip-flops that have material for a toe post instead of plastic. This can often be a little more forgiving on your feet.
Clarks Women’s Arla Glison Flip-Flops is a great example of this plus they have superior cushioning which makes them much more comfortable for wearing for extended periods.
Alternate Which Toe Is Used
Now my next solution is something I have never seen anywhere else and was a tip I picked up from my brother-in-law who lives in Australia and wears his flip-flops or thongs, as they call them down under, all the time.
His solution is that he alternates which toe goes between the toe post each time he wears them. This means sometimes his flip-flops sit between his big toe and index toe and at other times between his index toe and middle toe.
I took a picture because I was so intrigued by his simple trick that I thought my blog readers would love to try the same solution themselves.
Use a Flip-Flop Toe Protector
If it’s too late to buy new footwear for this season then you need to make the best of what you have this is where you need to purchase flip-flop toe protectors to stop the constant friction you might get from wearing them all day.
My favorite protection solution is these silicone toe guards that you slip in between the toe post to get extra cushioning in that area.
These are relatively inexpensive and easy to insert and take the pressure off which means less chance of any blisters.
Use a Blister Stick
If you are getting blisters from flip-flops then part of the shoe/sandal is rubbing against your feet when you are walking. In order to minimize this an anti-friction stick can work wonders.
Just rub the stick over your skin and the part of the flip-flop that is hurting your feet and the material from the sandal should slide over your feet without pressure or friction.
I use blister sticks on my heels as well with some shoes especially when they are new so it is a great product to have around.
Blisters on Bottom of Feet From Flip-Flops
If you have blisters from flip-flops on the bottom of your feet then this is just as annoying. Here are some simple things you can do to stop the problem.
Buy Cushioned Thongs
Cushioned flip-flops with the right arch support are going to be considerably kinder on your feet than the thin-soled ones that you buy.
The cushioning and arch support is designed to help you when you are walking and also prevent problems such as plantar fasciitis which can cause additional heel and foot pain.

Make Sure You Have The Right Size
Remember that you need to think about the size of any footwear you are buying and make sure that your feet feel comfortable in whatever you put on your feet.
You don’t want your feet to be sliding around or moving too much in your new flip-flops otherwise they are going to rub and you’ll develop blisters. Take the time to find a pair that suits you feet.
Break Them In
When you are buying a new pair of flip-flops and sandals it’s important to make sure that you break them in properly first before wearing them for a long period of time. Wearing them for short periods gives your feet time to adjust to the footwear and enables them to mold to your feet.
Use Cushioned Pads
As well as buying silicone toe post protectors you can also buy ones that have additional sections that help cushion the balls of your feet.
Insert these cushion pads onto the toe post of your footwear and this should help to prevent blisters and stop them from rubbing or hurting.
Keep Your Feet Dry
Sweaty feet are also another reason why sandals, shoes, and flip-flops have friction problems. As your feet sweat they are covered in moisture and this causes them to move around in any footwear you put on.
Sweaty feet don’t just cause blisters. shoe bites and sores they also make your feet ripe for fungal infections like Athlete’s foot.
To keep your feet dry wash and dry them regularly throughout the day. Plus wear foot powder to soak up the moisture or use one of my favorite foot problems of all time which is Carpe antiperspirant foot lotion that stops your feet from sweating in the first place.
How to Stop Flip-Flops Rubbing Top Of Foot
As if it isn’t bad enough that people get blisters from flip-flops between their toes as well as on the bottom of the foot some people also find that the straps can rub your skin as well and cause sore areas.
Most flip-flops aren’t adjustable so the affected area can’t be altered so what can you do?
My recommendation is to use stick-on moleskin and apply it to the underneath of the strap to cushion your skin from blisters when you are wearing your thongs. Moleskin can be bought in sheets and cut to size easily so it is a really simple solution to solve rubbing from shoes and sandals.
How Do You Treat Blisters From Flip-Flops?
So now I’ve given you some solutions to stop blisters from flip-flops what do you do if it’s already too late and you have a wound on your feet?
If there is a blister bubble where possible try and let that burst on its own. If it does need draining make sure you clean the affected area and your hands first and use a sterile needle to drain the fluid.
When the blister is drained apply a good anti-biotic cream to the area and then cover it with a blister plaster. Make sure you change the plaster regularly and seek medical treatment if the area looks infected or inflamed.
Remember prevention is always better so don’t try and push on and wear flip-flops that are hurting. Take action before they have a chance to give you blisters and your feet will thank you for it.
