Choosing the right footbed is essential as it is responsible for supporting your arches and heels. Both types of material do the job but what may be better for your feet and lifestyle?

Is EVA Better Than Cork?
EVA, short for ethylene vinyl acetate, is the new kid on the block in the footwear industry but Birkenstocks have embraced the material and started to use it in some of their shoe styles.
EVA material acts like a foam and that offers wearers some advantages in particular it is soft and flexible underfoot. It also provides excellent shock absorption easing the burden on your feet as you walk. So this is a great material for anyone looking for comfort.
Another important attribute of EVA is its waterproof quality, which makes Birkenstock EVA sandals a practical option for activities involving water or dampness. They can be worn at the beach or during a sudden downpour without worrying about damage or discomfort.
So EVA has some significant reasons to love it especially if you want comfort and lead an outdoorsy lifestyle.
Are EVA Birkenstocks Good For Your Feet?
As with most shoes there are reasons why you should wear them and reasons why they may not be helpful for your feet. This is why looking at Birkenstock EVA vs Cork pros and cons can help you to make the best decision for your need.
Here are some of the reasons why EVA Birkenstocks are actually good for your feet and worth buying.
Lightweight and Flexible
The first thing that is great about EVA birks is that they are lightweight and flexible making them super easy to wear. This is useful in the summer when I don’t want to be wearing heavy or clumpy sandals.
Waterproof and Easy to Clean
Unlike ordinary Birkenstocks their EVA range is resistant to water. This is a game changer as now you can wear them at the bead or on a wet day and they won’t get ruined. Plus cleaning them is a breeze in comparison to normal Birks.
Molds To Your Foot Shape
When it comes to comfort I want a sandal or shoe that molds to my foot shape and Birkenstocks EVA footbeds adapt to my feet perfectly. This not only gives me a more personalized fit but it also helps with comfort.
Has Good Arch Support
When it comes to foot health I am also find I need great arch support when it comes to shoes. Both styles of Birkenstocks help with this but I find the EVA style a little easier on my feet.
Absorb Shock
EVA material gives you cushioning to soften the impact whilst your walking which helps with comfort. As I’ve become older I definitely focus on comfort over style every time.
They Are Vegan
I’m not vegan but plenty of people are and these sandals are made without animal products. Whilst this doesn’t make the shoes good for your feet it does when it comes to ethical considerations.
The Price Is Affordable
The fact is that EVA Birkenstocks are cheaper than the ordinary styles meaning that they are more accessible to people. The downside is that they are easier to imitate and there are plenty of shoe companies creating similar replicas even cheaper all over the web.
They Are More Colorful In Some Styles
Most Birkentocks tend to come in muted tones but if you are after something more colorful the EVA styles come in a large range of fun colors. I personally like the plain black versions but there are plenty of people looking to wear something that stands out.
They Are Durable and Made To Last
Eva is exceptionally durable and can stand up to prolonged use making them even more worth it when it comes to saving money.
They Are Odor Resistant
Finally an important one when it comes to the summer months. EVA is great because it is more odor resistant than the cork footbeds. This means that your feet can stay fresh whilst you are wearing them. This is a considerable advantage as the old styles absorb sweat.
The Disadvantages of Birkenstock EVA Sandals
As ever when discussing Birkenstocks EVA vs cork sandals there are disadvantages as well but not many. A few I could think of include:
They Are Less Breathable
Birkenstocks EVA sandals are less breathable than cork. That means on a hot day if your hear sweat the moisture can sit on your sandals instead or being adsorbed making your feet slip around as you are wearing them.
There are Sustainability Concerns
Although EVA is durable and long-lasting, it is not sustainable like cork. Being a synthetic material, EVA doesn’t break down as naturally in the environment.
EVA Molds To Your Feet But Not As Well as Cork
EVA does not mold to the foot in the same way cork does over time. While it’s moldable when new, it lacks the custom, lifelong molding that characterizes cork footbeds.
They Are Not Easy to Repair
When EVA footbeds wear down or break, they can’t be repaired like cork options.
Cork Footbeds: The Natural Choice
Cork footbeds which are the traditional Birkenstock style are know for being comfortable and environmentally friendly. Cork bark regenerates over time, making it a sustainable resource with minimal impact on the ecosystem.
Plus the porous nature of cork allows for excellent breathability, keeping feet cool and preventing moisture build-up.
Birkenstock cork footbed sandals are also known for their antibacterial properties, which helps to inhibit bad foot odors and maintains a clean environment for your feet.
With time, cork molds to the contours of your foot, creating a personalized fit that enhances comfort and support.
The Pros of Traditional Birkenstock Cork Footbeds
There are plenty of benefits of Birkenstocks made from the traditional cork footbeds as well.
They Mold To Your Feet
Cork footbeds are well known as being great as they mold to the contours of your feet. Over time the sandals are completely tailored to your individual footprint making them really comfortable.
They Are Eco-Friendly
Made from the bark of cork oak trees, these footbeds are a sustainable choice. They boast an eco-conscious design that doesn’t sacrifice quality or durability.
They are Antibacterial
The natural properties of cork include being antibacterial, which helps to minimize foot odors. This is important for a summer sandal that can get smelly after prolonged wear in the heat.
They are Supportive
The resilient nature of cork provides remarkable arch support and effectively distributes weight across your foot, lessening the strain on your joints.
Birkenstocks Cork Footbeds are Durable
Not only do cork footbeds offer long-term comfort, but they also incredibly durable, making them a good investment. Some of mine have lasted years.
They Are Able To Manage Moisture
Cork does have some moisture-wicking properties which can help to keep sweaty feet dry which is really important when its hot.
Disadvantages of Birkenstocks Cork Sandals
Finally of course it is worth mentioning the cons of Birkenstock cork designs.
Initial Discomfort
The biggest disadvantage of the sandals for me is that they take a long time to break in. When you first put them on they are rigid and hard and it takes a while before they start to mold to your feet.
Water Sensitive
Can you wear Birkenstocks to the beach? Well I wouldn’t wear the cork ones for sure as they will get ruined. EVA wins when it comes to water resistance.
Cost More
As these made from cork footbeds and leather uppers they cost much more than the EVA sandals.
Need Regular Maintenance
Most people don’t realize that cork needs regular resealing to stop it drying and cracking which is time consuming and isn’t needed with the EVA sandals. Get used to using products like Cork Renew otherwise the sandals can start to deteriorate.
They Can Smell
Whilst the cork footbeds absorb sweat they also absorb smells which can be hard to get rid of. Cleaning Birkenstocks is a big job because you don’t want to ruin them with water.
The Designs and Colors Are Limited
As I mentioned earlier EVA sandals come in a big range of colors whilst their cork counterparts tend to look very samey and are in muted colors.
Most Are Not Vegan Friendly
Finally with a leather lining on most cork footbeds, they’re unsuitable for anyone looking for animal product-free shoes.
You Decide – EVA or Cork?
So when it comes to Birkenstock EVA vs cork footbeds which is really the best? Well the answer is it will depend on your foot health and lifestyle.
I believe that Birkenstock EVA footbeds are perfect holiday shoes and are great for the beach and around the swimming pool.
I personally don’t care about the bright colors I just like the fact that they can get wet and there are no problems if they do. Plus they don’t smell and are easy to clean.
However for style and long term comfort the Cork footbeds that mold to your shape are the reason why I bought into the brand in the first place. If they could only make it easier for them to be broken it I would love them even more.
So think about your lifestyle and the key features you need to have in your summer footwear before making a decision. Alternatively if you money is no object buy them both as you can use them in different environments and get the best of both worlds.
