As winter rolls in and the temperatures start to dip, it’s the perfect time to reassess your footwear needs. For me the best winter shoes aren’t just about practicality—they’re an essential part of my cold-weather wardrobe, blending warmth, comfort, and style to help me face the elements without losing that personal touch.
But with so many options out there, it can be tricky to decide which shoes are truly worth it. Whether you’re trudging through slushy streets or dressing up for festive gatherings, finding the right winter shoes is a must if you want to stay both warm and stylish.
From cozy, insulated sneakers for running errands to sleek, lined loafers for those more polished moments, there’s a pair for every winter scenario.
Here are some of the best types of footwear you can wear this year that won’t sacrifice fashion for function, no matter how cold it gets!

Buy Dr Martens Winter Grip
Dr. Martens have been my one of my winter staple for years, and for good reason. Their tough leather and thick, air-cushioned soles make them perfect for trudging through rain, slush, and whatever winter throws my way.
Whilst the ordinary versions are great for milder weather the brand does offer a winter grip style that is useful in more challenging conditions. You can read all about my thoughts on wearing Doc Martens in Winter in my post on the topic.
I tend to find the water-resistant leather keeps my feet dry, even on those wet, slushy days when everything seems to get soaked through. Plus, the grippy soles are a lifesaver when the sidewalks are icy.
What I really appreciate is how they combine style and function. Dr. Martens have that bold, edgy look I love, but they’re also incredibly practical for winter. The only time I wouldn’t wear them would be in any significant snow.
I’ve had mine for years, and with a little care, they still look great and perform just as well. They’re definitely an investment, but one that pays off every winter when I can step outside without worrying about the cold or the conditions.
Waterproof Sneakers
When you think of winter footwear, sneakers might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but they can actually be a fantastic option for colder months.
I’ve discovered that certain insulated or weatherproof sneakers are perfect for keeping your feet warm and protected during winter. I love my sneakers made with Gore-Tex or treated leathe because they repel moisture and keep my feet dry, even when I’m trudging through slushy sidewalks or caught in unexpected rain.
I also find that high-top styles are great for extra ankle support and warmth, which is a nice bonus on those chilly days.
The cushioned soles and lightweight feel make them super comfortable for everyday wear. Whether I’m running errands or exploring the city, I appreciate how versatile they are. They easily transition from a casual outing to a quick trip to the grocery store, allowing me to stay stylish and comfortable no matter what winter throws at me.
Plus, I love how I can pair them with everything from jeans to cozy leggings, making them my go-to casual choice throughout the season!
Winter Loafers For Women
This year in particular is all about loafers having a resurgence. Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and even Taylor Swift have all been rocking the loafer look so the style is in big demand at the moment.
There is something about loafers that makes them feel practical but also super stylish adding a polished look to my outfits.
If you are going to buy loafers make sure that you are picking something that is water-resistant and made from treated leather or suede so that they can deal with bad weather. Whilst they might not be great in heavy snow and ice they are great shoes to wear around town in wet weather.
Plus, the slip-on design makes them so easy to wear. Oh and you can also pair them with warm socks if you want giving you that extra warmth when you need it. I love loafers as they are versatile and stylish, making them perfect for everything from casual outings to more formal settings.
Lace Ups/Oxfords
Lace-up shoes, especially Oxfords, are one of my favorite winter footwear choices because they effortlessly blend preppy style with a laid-back vibe.
While they may not be suitable for formal occasions their polished look makes them perfect for both casual and professional settings. I love how they can be paired with a variety of outfits, from tailored trousers to skirts and dresses.
For instance, I often wear my Oxfords with a flowy midi skirt or a classic A-line dress; they add a touch of sophistication while keeping the overall look relaxed.
The clean lines and classic silhouette make them an easy choice for creating that preppy aesthetic without feeling overly formal. Plus, the comfort of lace-up shoes means I can stay stylish while running errands or meeting friends for lunch. They’re versatile enough to elevate my outfits while still maintaining a casual, easygoing feel, making them a go-to choice for winter days!
Buy Chunky Heel Shoes As Winter Footwear
For a chic yet practical winter shoe, I absolutely love chunky heeled shoes.
Unlike stilettos or thinner heels, chunky heels offer so much more stability, which is a game-changer when you’re trying to navigate icy or uneven sidewalks.
Many of the chunky-heeled shoes I own are made from durable materials like leather or suede, and they often come with water-resistant finishes to keep my feet dry. I really appreciate how the added height of the heel elevates my look while also keeping my feet off the cold ground, which helps prevent that uncomfortable chill from seeping in. These shoes let me maintain a dressy vibe without sacrificing comfort or safety, making them my go-to choice for winter outings when I want to feel stylish and secure.
Mary Jane Shoes
One of my all-time favorite shoes for winter has to be Mary Janes. I love them so much that I have a guide to some of the best Mary Jane shoe styles that are out currently.
There’s just something about the classic strap and feminine vibe that never goes out of style, and they can absolutely be worn in colder weather with a few thoughtful adjustments. I’ve found winter versions of Mary Janes with thicker soles and even some lined with cozy materials to keep my feet warm, which makes all the difference when it’s chilly out.
I love pairing them with opaque tights to keep me warm. Plus I sometimes seek out the ones with more textured, grippy soles to deal with the winter weather.
What I love about them is how versatile they are and how they work whether I’m at a casual brunch or a more dressy occasion. They’re one of those shoes that can easily transition from indoor events to colder outdoor settings, making them a reliable go-to for winter occasions.
So what winter shoes appeal to you the most? Let me know so I can feature them in more of my posts.
