As the seasons start to change so does my wardrobe and I start to think about what to wear on my feet on my way to work. Cold winds, wet sidewalks and icy pavements need practical footwear yet most workplaces expect a formal, professional and polished look in the office. So I thought I’d talk about the best winter boot styles for the office.
Not all winter boots make the cut. You need to choose carefully and find the balance between wearing something that is warm and comfortable but also stylish and office appropriate.
Fortunately, women’s boots now come in a huge variety of styles so it is possible to stay cozy and dry in the colder weather without compromising on professionalism. Here are some of my favorite boot styles that will work in most offices this winter.

Heeled Ankle Boots for Office Wear
Let’s start with a classic and that is the heeled ankle boot. These are an office staple that fall just at or slightly above the ankle.
I love this style of boot because they are chic and versatile. You can’t go wrong with a pointed or almond shaped toe and a block heel to give you stability when you are out on slippery winter pavements.
There is no need to wear anything overly high. I tend to stick to mid height heels in the winter as I don’t want to be worried about my balance as well as the weather.
This style of ankle boots works well with tailored trousers and suits and even pencil skirts and tights. Just make sure you opt for neutral shades in black, navy or taupe and choose premium materials like leather or suede.
Avoid overly chunky soles or casual details if your office is more of a formal one.

Elegant Heeled Knee-High Boots for Work Outfits
Of course heeled knee high boots are another chic option for the office. This style of boot covers the calf and extends to just below the knee making them warmer and cozier in the colder weather.
Steer clear of over the knee boots as they are way too casual for most work places. Instead choose knee highs with a close-fitting shaft so that you don’t get any gaping around your calf. If you have wide calves don’t worry as plenty of retailers now stock a great range of wider calf boots.
Knee high boots work really well with midi skirts, shift dresses or with trousers. A slim or a stacked heel will give you any height you want without you sacrificing your comfort. Remember you want something practical that you can wear all day including your commute and moving between meetins.
Leather knee-highs in black or deep brown are timeless, but don’t be afraid to experiment with burgundy or navy for subtle personality while remaining professional.

Classic Chelsea Boots for Women’s Professional Style
Few boots bridge the line between formal and versatile as well as the Chelsea boot. With their elastic side panels, pull-on design, and sleek low profile, Chelsea boots are both classic and practical.
They originated as men’s dress boots in Victorian London, which explains their smart, tailored vibe. Today, women’s Chelsea boots come in polished leather or suede finishes and can be worn with slim trousers, suits, or dresses.
For a formal office look, choose pointed-toe or almond-toe Chelseas with a small block heel rather than casual flat or lug-sole versions. Their understated elegance makes them an investment piece that never goes out of style.
Style tip: Black leather Chelseas are the most formal option, but taupe or gray suede versions add softness to a neutral winter wardrobe.

Dressy Sock Boots for a Sleek Winter Office Look
Many people forget about sock boots those fitted stretchy boots that hug your ankle or calf but they can work in a professional wardrobe.
Their slim body-hugging shilhouette makes them idea for wearing under tailored trousers or midi skirts without creating bulky lines.
In the office, stick with neutral shades (black, navy, gray) in suede or smooth finishes. Pair them with cropped trousers or A-line skirts to highlight the streamlined look.
Sock boots often come with a stiletto or slim block heel, which adds polish and femininity without overpowering the outfit. Just be wary of wearing them when it is snowy, icy or very wet as they don’t hold up as well as leather boots in bad weather.

Flat Knee-High Boots for Comfortable Office Wear
Not all office-appropriate boots need to have heels. Flat knee-high boots offer the same elegant shape as heels plus they are much more comfortable if you have a long commute or are spending time on your feet.
When you style them correctly they can look every bit as professional as heeled options. Choose sleek leather versions with a slim shaft and minimal embellishment.
Pair them with pencil skirts, midi dresses, or even with trousers tucked in for a polished equestrian-inspired look. Stick to leather or suede finishes in black or deep brown and whatever you do avoid brash riding style hardware or big buckles as they won’t look right in a formal office setting.

Low-Heeled Block Boots for All-Day Work Comfort
Low-heeled block boots are another great style that will be comfortable to wear all day in the office. If you choose a pair with a modest heel of 1 or 2 inches you’ll get a little extra height without hurting or straining your feel.
You can get block heeled boots in ankle, mid-calf and knee-high versions so you should find a style that you like.
Sleek leather ankle boots with a small block heel are great with suits and wide-leg trousers whilst the mid-calf versions are better when the weather is colder.
If like me you need extra comfort find a pair with cushioned insoles and also look for anti-slip soles to deal with the winter weather.

Wedge Boots: Stylish and Practical for the Workplace
Wedge boots are often overlooked but they are are a smart alternative for anyone who wants height but needs more stability than a stiletto heel offers. The wedge sole helps to distribute your weight more evenly, making them comfortable for all-day wear, even on icy streets.
Choose wedge boots in polished leather or suede with clean lines. Avoid overly casual wedge sneakers or boots with rugged soles, as these lean more casual than professional. Knee-high wedges pair particularly well with fitted skirts or dresses in a business environment.
Remember if you are buying boots in suede finishes make sure you use a good protector spray on them first as the salts on pavements can stain them really easily.

How to Style Winter Boots for the Office
Choosing the right boot is of course only have the equation as styling them is what really makes the difference.
You can’t go too far wrong with the following combinations.
- With trousers: Slim or straight-leg trousers work best tucked into boots or worn over ankle boots. Wide-leg trousers look elegant with block-heeled ankle boots.
- With skirts and dresses: Midi lengths are ideal with knee-high boots. Pair them with opaque tights for warmth.
- With colors: Stick to versatile neutrals such as black, brown, gray, or navy so they coordinate with your professional workwear.
- With fabrics: Smooth leather and suede always look sharper and more chic than distressed finishes.
